A Plea Left to Mercy

Meaning · English
Uma, be kind to me, the poor one; mercy is your nature. Mother of the world, your mercy is how you are known. Do what fits; you take away great pain.
The singer turns plainly to asking. He calls himself poor, with nothing to bring, so he leans on her nature instead of his own worth. Kindness to the helpless is simply what she does. Mother of the world: the title is the argument. Her mercy is how anyone recognizes her at all. Then he does not name what he wants. He says, do whatever is fitting here, leaving the choice with her, and names her as the one who takes heavy suffering away.
A small child hands a parent a knotted shoelace and says nothing about how to fix it. The child does not know the method and does not need to. The singer stands the same way: he brings his trouble, calls her mother, and leaves what is fitting in her hands.
