Meaning · English

Self, body, senses, their objects, cognition, mind, activity, faults, rebirth, fruit, suffering and release: these are what is to be known.

Having named the ways of knowing, Gautama asks the next question: knowing what? Prameya means 'what is to be known', and for the Nyaya twelve things matter most. Vatsyayana reads them as one connected story. The self (atman) is the one who experiences. The body is where experience happens. The senses are its tools. Their objects are what gets experienced. Cognition (buddhi) is the experiencing itself. The mind (manas) is an inner organ that can turn to any object, since each sense handles only its own kind. Activity (pravritti) and faults (dosha) are what keep producing body, senses, their objects, cognition and the feeling of pleasure. Rebirth: this body is neither the first nor the last. Fruit is the tasting of pleasure and pain. Suffering does not deny that pleasure exists. It names birth as bound up with pain, something to reflect on until detachment grows. Release (apavarga) is the end of the chain of births and deaths. Vatsyayana adds that much else is knowable. These twelve are singled out because, for the Nyaya, seeing them truly frees a person and misjudging them binds.

Think of a doctor's chart clipped to a hospital bed. The patient has a favourite song, a birthday and a street address, all perfectly true. None of that goes on the chart. The chart holds only what bears on the illness and its cure. The twelve work the same way: not everything that can be known, only what bears on the trouble and on getting free of it.

Modern epistemology mostly asks how we know, not what we most need to know. The Nyaya joins the two and points its theory of knowledge at a practical goal. Part of the list fits today's picture well. Cognitive science also separates the senses from a central system that combines and selects their input, and manas maps loosely onto attention. The self as a lasting experiencer is still argued over in philosophy of mind, and how experience arises at all, the hard problem of consciousness, remains open. Rebirth has no support in mainstream science. The link between faults like craving and aversion and our distress has a clear modern echo. Cognitive therapy holds that how we judge events shapes how much they hurt us.
