The nose, the tongue, the eye, the skin and the ear are the senses. They come from the elements.
The question behind the sutra: what does a person perceive with, and why does each instrument stay in its own lane? Gautama names five indriyas, or sense faculties: smell, taste, sight, touch and hearing, seated in the nose, tongue, eye, skin and ear. Then he says where they come from: the bhutas, the physical elements. Vatsyayana explains the names first. Each sense is named for what it does. Smelling grasps odour, tasting grasps flavour, seeing grasps colour and form, and hearing grasps sound. Touch is the one exception, because it is named after its seat, the skin. So for the Nyaya a sense is defined by grasping its own kind of object and no other. Why such a strict division? Vatsyayana finds the answer in the last phrase. The senses come from different elements, not from one shared source. Because their material origins differ, each is tied to a fixed range of objects. If all five were made of one stuff, nothing would stop the eye from hearing.
Draw a magnet slowly across a cluttered desk. It lifts the steel pins and the paper clips and leaves the paper, the pencil and the glass exactly where they lie. What it catches depends on what it is made of. In the same way, the Nyaya pictures each sense as built from one element, and so it picks up only the quality that belongs to that element.
Part of this sits well beside today's physiology. The senses are specialised. The eye has receptors that respond to light, the ear has cells that respond to vibration, and the nose and tongue have chemical receptors. Each sense really does have its own range of input, and that is close to the Nyaya point. The explanation differs, though. Modern biology does not trace the senses to five elements, and the matching of senses to elements has no modern counterpart. Today the senses are also counted as more than five, since balance, body position, temperature and pain have their own systems. One question stays open on both sides: how a signal in a specialised nerve becomes the felt experience of red or of a bell. Philosophy of mind calls this the hard problem of consciousness.
