The Hall of Maya
Mahabharata, Sabha Parva 3
The story · English
Maya Danava spoke to Arjuna, the successful warrior, asking for leave to depart. He explained that he had once gathered a vast quantity of variegated materials, jewels, and gems near the mountains of Mainaka on the north of the Kailasa peak. These treasures had been kept in the mansion of Vrishaparva, a Danava king ever devoted to truth. Maya told Arjuna that if these materials still existed, he would return with them to begin the construction of a palace for the Pandavas. He intended to build a home adorned with every kind of gem, a place that would be celebrated throughout the entire world.
Maya recalled that in the lake Vindu, there remained a fierce club used by the King of the Danavas to slaughter all his foes in battle. This weapon was heavy, strong, and decorated with golden knobs. Maya believed it was capable of bearing great weight and slaying any enemy, possessing the strength of a hundred thousand clubs. He told Arjuna that this weapon would be a fit match for Bhima, just as the Gandiva bow was for Arjuna. Additionally, he mentioned a large conch-shell called Devadatta, which had come from Varuna and possessed a loud sound. Maya promised to bring both the club and the conch-shell back for the brothers. Having spoken thus, the Asura departed in a north-easterly direction.
The region near the Hiranya-sringa peak and the lake Vindu was a place of great spiritual significance. King Bhagiratha had lived there for many years to behold the goddess Ganga. Indra, the lord of all created things, had performed one hundred great sacrifices there, using gold altars and gem-studded stakes for beauty. It was also the abode of the eternal lord Mahadeva, who dwelt there worshipped by thousands of spirits. In this sacred land, Nara, Narayana, Brahma, Yama, and Sthanu performed sacrifices every thousand yugas, and Vasudeva had spent many long years performing pious sacrifices to establish virtue and religion, setting up thousands and tens of thousands of sacrificial stakes adorned with golden garlands, and altars of great splendour.
Maya traveled to these lands and brought back the club, the conch-shell and the crystalline articles of king Vrishaparva, and he also took possession of the great wealth guarded by Yakshas and Rakshasas. Using these materials, he constructed a peerless palace of celestial make, renowned across the three worlds. He presented the great club to Bhimasena and to Arjuna the conch-shell at whose sound all creatures trembled. The palace occupied an area of five thousand cubits and featured columns of gold. Its brilliance was so intense that it seemed to darken the rays of the sun, glowing with a mixture of celestial and terrestrial light that made the structure look as if it were on fire. Like a mass of new clouds in the sky, it rose into the view of all.
The palace surpassed the mansions of Brahma or Sudharma in beauty, guarded by eight thousand fierce Kinkaras with coppery eyes and arrowy ears. Inside, Maya built a transparent tank without mud, filled with golden fish, tortoises, and lotuses with jewel stalks. The banks were made of marble and pearls. Seeing the tank so adorned with jewels, many visiting kings mistook it for land and fell in. Around the mansion, Maya planted ever-blossoming trees of green foliage and artificial woods that emitted a delicious fragrance, along with tanks filled with swans and ducks. After fourteen months of labor, Maya completed this magnificent hall and reported its completion to Yudhishthira.
