The Fall of Jarasandha
Mahabharata, Sabha Parva 23
The story · English
Krishna addressed King Jarasandha, who was resolved upon fighting, and asked him which of the three men present he desired to fight. Jarasandha, the ruler of Magadha, expressed his desire to fight Bhima. A priest approached Jarasandha with yellow pigment, flower garlands, and medicines to restore consciousness and alleviate pain. Following these propitiatory ceremonies, Jarasandha remembered the duty of a warrior. He took off his crown and bound his hair, standing up like an ocean bursting its continents. He looked at Bhima and said that he would fight him, noting that it was better to be defeated by a superior person. With great energy, Jarasandha rushed at Bhimasena, while Bhima advanced toward him, having been encouraged by Krishna.
The two heroes engaged each other with their bare arms as their only weapons. They seized each other's arms and twined their legs, slapping their arm-pits with such force that the enclosure trembled. They gripped each other's necks, dragging and pushing with violence, pressing every limb of their bodies against the other. Sometimes they stretched their arms and other times drew them close, raising and dropping them as they tried to seize each other. When they struck neck against neck and forehead against forehead, fiery sparks flew like flashes of lightning. They kicked each other with violence that affected the innermost nerves and struck at each other's breasts with clenched fists. Roaring like clouds, they grasped and struck one another like two mad elephants fighting with their trunks.
Incensed by the blows, the two fought like wrathful lions, dragging and pushing one another. They caught each other by the waist and hurled one another a great distance. As masters of wrestling, they used the Prishtabhanga technique, throwing the opponent face down to the earth and holding them there as long as possible. They also performed the Sampurna-murchcha and Purna-kumbha feats. At times, they twisted each other's arms and limbs as if they were vegetable fibers being twisted into cords. With clenched fists, they pretended to aim for one limb while the blow actually descended upon another part of the body. This brutal display of strength continued as the two heroes sought any slight lapse in the other's defense.
Thousands of citizens, including Brahmanas, Kshatriyas, Vaisyas, Sudras, women, and the aged, gathered to behold the fight. The crowd became a solid mass of humanity with no space between them. The sound of slapping arms, the seizing of necks, and the grasping of legs sounded like the roar of thunder or falling cliffs. Bhima and Jarasandha fought terribly in the lists, driving the crowd back with the motions of their hands. They mangled each other dreadfully, throwing each other face downward and sideways with sudden jerks. They struck each other with their knee-joints and exchanged stinging speeches, their clenched fists falling like masses of stone. Their long arms acted like maces of iron as they continued the struggle.
The encounter began on the first day of the month of Kartic. The two heroes fought without intermission or food, day and night, until the thirteenth lunar day. By the night of the fourteenth, Jarasandha finally desisted, exhausted by fatigue. Krishna, seeing the king tired, spoke to Bhima as if to spur him on. He told him that a fatigued foe should not be pressed too hard, as he might simply die. Krishna advised Bhima to fight using only as much strength as his antagonist had left. Bhima understood the hint and Jarasandha's plight, and at once resolved to take his life. He told Krishna that this wretch, who still stood before him bent upon fighting, should not be forgiven.
Krishna encouraged Bhima to use the strength he had derived from his father, the god Maruta. Bhima then seized the powerful Jarasandha and held him up in the air, whirling him around a full hundred times. Finally, Bhima pressed his knee against Jarasandha's backbone and broke his body in two. As Jarasandha died, Bhima uttered a terrible roar. The sound of the roar and the death knell of the king caused a loud uproar that struck fear into every creature. The citizens of Magadha were dumb with terror, and many women were prematurely delivered. The people believed that either the Himavat mountain was tumbling down or the earth itself was being rent asunder.
Leaving the lifeless body of the king at the palace gate as if he were asleep, Krishna and the brothers left the town. Krishna prepared Jarasandha's excellent car, with its great flagstaff, for Bhima and Arjuna to ride in. He then entered the city and released the imprisoned relatives. These kings, rich in jewels, approached Krishna and gave him gems as presents. Krishna then came out of Girivraja riding the celestial car. The car had been owned by King Vasu, then Vrihadratha, and finally Jarasandha. It was the same car that Indra and Vishnu had used in the battle against the Asuras. Its wheels clattered like the roar of clouds, and its rainbow-colored flagstaff could be seen from a yojana away.
As Krishna emerged from the fort, he thought of Garuda, who arrived instantly. Garuda, massive in body and a feeder on snakes, sat upon the car along with the frightening creatures on the flagstaff. This made the car as dazzling as the midday sun. The flagstaff was made with celestial skill, so that it never struck a tree and no weapon could injure it. Krishna stopped on a level plain outside the town, where the citizens and Brahmanas gathered to adore him. The released kings worshipped the slayer of Madhu and told Krishna that he had rescued them from the deep mire of sorrow. They bowed to him and asked for his commands, promising to accomplish whatever he requested.
Krishna told the kings that Yudhishthira desired to perform the Rajasuya sacrifice to acquire imperial dignity and asked them to assist him. The monarchs joyfully accepted and gave Krishna more jewels. Then Sahadeva, the son of Jarasandha, approached with his relatives and priest. Bending low and offering precious stones, the prince worshipped Vasudeva. Krishna gave the fearful prince assurance, accepted his presents, and installed him as the sovereign of Magadha. Sahadeva, having obtained the friendship of Krishna and the respect of the sons of Pritha, re-entered the city of his father. Krishna, laden with jewels, then departed Magadha with the sons of Pandu and arrived at Indraprastha.
Krishna joyfully informed Yudhishthira that Jarasandha had been slain and the prisoners freed. Yudhishthira worshipped Krishna and embraced Bhima and Arjuna. The brothers celebrated the victory with pleasure and merriment. Yudhishthira entertained the visiting kings before dismissing them to their respective countries. Afterward, Krishna took leave of Yudhishthira, Pritha, Draupadi, Subhadra, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva. As he was about to set out for Dwarka in the celestial car, the Pandavas walked around him in respect. This victory greatly swelled the fame of the Pandavas. Yudhishthira continued to protect his subjects, ensuring that everything consistent with virtue, pleasure, and profit was properly executed.
