The story · English

On the final day of the sacrifice, the great Brahmin Rishis and the invited kings entered the inner enclosure of the sacrificial compound. Among them was Narada, who sat comfortably with the royal sages. The atmosphere was one of intellectual vibrancy. The Rishis engaged in deep discussions, debating various topics and using sharp arguments to make weak positions seem strong and strong ones seem weak. Some were experts in religious treatises and rigid vows, while others were well-versed in commentaries. To an observer, the platform crowded with gods and scholars looked as beautiful as a night sky filled with stars. There were no people without vows or those of the Sudra caste near that platform of King Yudhisthira's mansion.

Narada looked upon the prosperity of Yudhisthira and felt gratified, but as he surveyed the vast gathering of Kshatriyas, he became thoughtful. He remembered words he had heard in the mansion of Brahma regarding the incarnation of deities on earth. Narada realized that this assembly was a gathering of incarnate gods. He thought of Narayana, the Supreme Lord, who had once commanded the celestial beings to be born on earth, slay one another, and then return to heaven. Narada knew that Narayana had taken birth in the race of Yadus, specifically within the line of the Andhaka-Vrishnis, to fulfill that very promise. He recognized that the Lord was currently living in human form as Krishna.

Narada, the omniscient, understood that Krishna was the Self-Created one who would eventually remove this powerful concourse of Kshatriyas from the earth. Gifted with great intelligence and a deep understanding of morality, Narada sat at the sacrifice of the just King Yudhisthira with feelings of awe. While the other guests conversed and debated, Narada remained in a state of quiet contemplation, knowing the divine nature of the man who sat among them. After some time, Bhishma turned his attention to King Yudhisthira to discuss the proper way to honor the guests. He believed that certain people deserved a specific mark of respect known as Arghya, which should be offered to the kings present.

Bhishma explained to Yudhisthira that there are six types of people who deserve Arghya: a preceptor, a sacrificial priest, a relative, a Snataka, a friend, and a king. According to the wise, if any of these people stay with a host for a full year, they should be worshipped with this honor. Since these kings had been staying with them for some time, Bhishma advised that they should now receive the Arghya. He specifically instructed Yudhisthira that the first honor should be presented to the person among the guests who was the most foremost. Yudhisthira asked Bhishma who, in his estimation, was the most deserving person to receive the first Arghya.

Bhishma used his intelligence to judge who among all the men on earth was the greatest. He told Yudhisthira that Krishna was the foremost of them all. He compared Krishna to the sun among all luminous objects, noting that his energy, strength, and prowess were unmatched. Bhishma described Krishna's presence as a sun illuminating a dark region or a breeze refreshing a still area. Following this command, Sahadeva, who was known for his own great prowess, stepped forward and presented the first Arghya of excellent ingredients to Krishna of the Vrishni race. Krishna accepted the offering in accordance with the proper religious ordinances. However, not everyone in the assembly was pleased with this decision.

Sisupala, the King of Chedi, could not bear to see Vasudeva receive such worship. He began to censure both Bhishma and Yudhisthira in front of the entire assembly. Sisupala argued that Krishna did not deserve royal worship as if he were a king, especially in the presence of so many illustrious monarchs. He told the son of Pandu that this conduct was not worthy of the Pandavas. He claimed that the sons of Pandu were like children who did not understand the subtle nature of morality. He further accused Bhishma of having little knowledge and transgressing the rules of morality by giving such counsel, suggesting that Bhishma was acting out of motives of interest.

Sisupala continued his attack, questioning why a man who was not even a king should be honored before actual kings. He challenged the reasoning behind the choice. If the honor was based on age, he asked how the son could be called the eldest when Krishna's father Vasudeva was present. If it was based on being a well-wisher, he mentioned Drupada. He asked why Krishna was honored over Drona as a preceptor, or over Dwaipayana as a priest. He listed several other figures who were present and more deserving, including Bhishma himself, the brave Aswatthaman, the King of kings Duryyodhana, and Kripa. He argued that there was no logical reason to pass over these men to honor Krishna.

Sisupala's anger grew as he listed more names. He mentioned the invincible Bhishmaka, King Pandya, Rukmi, Ekalavya, and Salya. He pointedly mentioned Karna, who boasted of his strength and had vanquished many monarchs. He declared that the slayer of Madhu was neither a priest, a preceptor, nor a king, and concluded that Yudhisthira must have acted out of a desire for gain. He questioned why the other monarchs had been brought there only to be insulted. He stated that the kings had paid tribute to Yudhisthira not out of fear or greed, but because Yudhisthira sought the imperial dignity from motives of virtue, yet they were now being insulted by this misplaced honor.

In his final outburst, Sisupala accused Yudhisthira of abandoning righteousness and displaying meanness. He claimed that Krishna had unrighteously killed King Jarasandha in the past. He mocked Krishna, comparing him to a dog lapping up clarified butter in solitude. He told Krishna that this royal worship was useless to him, just as a fine show is useless to a blind man or a wife is useless to a man without virile power, because Krishna was no king. After declaring that the true natures of Yudhisthira, Bhishma, and Vasudeva had been revealed for all to see, Sisupala rose from his seat and led the other kings out of the assembly.
