The Joining That Reveals

Yoga Sutras 2.23

Meaning · English

Owner and owned, the power of the Seer and the power of the seen, are yoked together. This yoking is the cause of coming to know the true form of each.

Four terms carry it. Samyoga: sam is together, and yoga comes from yuj, to yoke. It is a yoking of two things. Sva and svamin: the owned and the owner. They stand for two powers, the power of the seen and the power of the Seer, one belonging to the other as a possession belongs to its owner. Svarupa: sva is own, rupa is form, so a thing's own form. Upalabdhi: a getting, an arrival at knowledge. Hetu: cause. The plain sense is this. The two powers are yoked, and that yoking is the cause of knowing each one's own form. Neither is known alone. The seen is known by being seen, and the Seer is known through what it sees. Patanjali says it because 2.21 and 2.22 have just said the seen exists for the Seer's sake. The next question is why the two meet at all. His answer is that the meeting is how each is understood. Suffering, in his teaching, comes from this meeting taken wrongly, and 2.24 names the cause. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads the joining as the ground of experience, and experience as the road to knowing the Seer. Later commentators describe the nature of the joining in different ways, since the Seer itself does not change.

A woman stands before a mirror. The mirror shows her face, and her face shows whether the mirror is clean or smudged. Neither is known without the other being there. The mirror is the seen, the woman is the Seer, and the standing together is the joining that lets each be known.

1. Choose one small discomfort today, such as a hurried moment, a sharp word, or tiredness at the end of the day. 2. Stop for one minute and name two things separately: the feeling itself, and the one who is aware of it. 3. Notice where the two seem to run together, and where they come apart. 4. Later, write one line about what you saw. Do not judge it.
