Root of the Binding

Yoga Sutras 2.24

Meaning · English

The cause of that joining is not knowing: avidya, ignorance of what is true.

Three words carry the sutra. Tasya means "of this," the joining of Seer and seen that 2.23 described. Hetu means a cause, the thing a result rests on. Avidya is made of a, "not," and vidya, "knowing." It is not a lack of facts. It is a wrong seeing, taking one thing for another. Put whole, the sutra says the cause of the Seer's tangled joining with what is seen is avidya. The question behind it is plain: if the joining brings pain, what keeps it going? Patanjali answers that it rests on a mistake, not on some outside force. That fits what comes before. 2.23 said the joining has a use, and this sutra names what binds it so closely that the two seem one. Vyasa's Bhashya reads avidya as a false knowing, a cognition that is itself faulty, not mere absence. He describes it as a cause that works on the mind and leaves its traces there. Later readers, such as Vachaspati Mishra, add detail about how it operates, but they agree it is the root.

A coat hangs on a hook in a dim hallway. At a glance it looks like a person standing there, and your heart jumps. Nothing in the hallway changed. Only the seeing was wrong. The fright is the joining, and the mistaken glance is avidya.

1. Choose one small irritation today, such as a delay, a sharp word or a crowded train. 2. When it arrives, stop for about a minute and ask what you are taking yourself to be in that moment: your pride, your plan, your comfort. 3. Note that one thing, in a word or two, without arguing with it. 4. That evening, spend two minutes recalling whether the irritation rested on that assumption.
