Three Names, One Knowing

Nyaya Sutras 1.1.15

Meaning · English

Buddhi, apprehension and knowledge: these three words do not name different things. They mean one and the same.

The question is simple: when we say the intellect, an apprehension, or a piece of knowledge, are we talking about three things or one? Nyaya lists buddhi among the prameyas, the things a careful thinker must understand correctly. Here it settles what buddhi is. Buddhi, upalabdhi (grasping or apprehending something) and jnana (knowing) are, for the Nyaya, one event under three names: an act of cognition. Vatsyayana explains why this needs saying. A rival view treats buddhi as an unconscious inner instrument that does the work while a separate self only witnesses it. Vatsyayana answers that knowing cannot belong to something unconscious. If an instrument really knew, it would be conscious, and then it would not be a mere instrument. For the Nyaya there is one conscious knower, and it is distinct from the bundle of body and senses. It follows that cognition is not a separate inner organ. It is something that happens to the self, the knower.

A newspaper reports that a telescope spotted a new comet. The lens and mirror gathered the light, but the noticing happened in the astronomer at the eyepiece. Call it spotting, seeing or recognising, and it is still one event in one person. The telescope maps to body and senses. The single noticing, under its several names, maps to buddhi as Nyaya understands it.

Modern epistemology draws distinctions Nyaya merges in this sutra. It separates a cognition, which can be false, from knowledge, which must be true and justified, and since Gettier it has argued about what justification needs. Nyaya makes a similar split elsewhere, through its pramanas, the means of valid knowledge, so jnana here is closer to cognition in general. On the knower, the picture is mixed. Psychology has strong evidence that the brain processes much information without awareness, as in blindsight and masked priming. That suggests processing and conscious knowing can come apart, which sits nearer the rival view Vatsyayana rejects. Yet why any processing is felt at all remains the hard problem of consciousness, still unsolved. Whether there is one knower beyond body and brain is a live, unsettled question in philosophy of mind.
