The sign by which the mind is known: several cognitions do not arise at one and the same moment.

Why posit a mind at all? The eye sees, the ear hears, the nose smells. Gautama answers with a linga, a sign or mark from which something unseen is inferred. The sign of manas, the mind, is that cognitions do not arise together. Vatsyayana, the 5th-century commentator, sets out the argument. At any moment the nose is in contact with a smell, the eye with a colour, the skin with a texture. If contact between a sense and its object were enough, all these cognitions would appear at once. They do not. They come one by one. So, Vatsyayana reasons, some further cause must work alongside each sense. It is linked to the sense and is not spread everywhere at once. When it joins a sense, a cognition arises. When it is absent, none does. That cause is the mind. He adds that memory, which uses no outer sense, also points to an inner instrument. For the Nyaya, the mind is a gate that lets one report through at a time.

1. At your next meal, spend five minutes noticing whether taste, the sounds around you and your passing thoughts arrive together or take turns. 2. Before one task today, silence your phone and close other windows for 25 minutes. Work on that one thing only. 3. In your next conversation, put the phone face down and only listen. 4. Tonight, recall one moment when you tried to do two things at once. Note which one slipped.

Cognitive science agrees with part of this. Attention has a narrow channel. When people must respond to two signals in quick succession, they answer the second more slowly. What feels like multitasking is mostly rapid switching. Global workspace theories describe a limited stage where one content at a time is broadcast to the rest of the mind. That is close to the Nyaya picture. But much processing runs in parallel below awareness. The brain merges sight and sound continuously, and people walk and talk together. So the claim holds best for focused, reportable awareness, not for all processing. The argument's form, inferring a hidden cause from a regular pattern, is ordinary scientific reasoning. Nyaya holds that the mind is a separate substance that does not pervade everything, and that has no modern match. Today the bottleneck is located in brain networks.
