Activity is the setting in motion of speech, mind and body. The faults are known by this mark: they push us into acting.
Two items from the Nyaya list of things worth knowing are defined together. The first is pravritti, activity. For the Nyaya, activity is any start made with speech, mind or body: saying, thinking or doing. The sutra uses the word buddhi for the mind. Vatsyayana explains that here it means the inner instrument by which we know, not knowledge itself. He adds that such activity can be good or bad, and he counts ten kinds. The second item is the dosha, or fault. The sutra defines faults by what they do: they drive a person to act. Vatsyayana names them as attraction, aversion and delusion, and says the first two arise where understanding is mistaken. Why define them by their effect, when everyone feels them from the inside? Because, he argues, the attached, the averse and the confused are recognised by their actions, which bring them pleasure or pain. Three bare names would say too little.
On a gusty day you never see the wind itself. You see a plastic bag skidding across the car park, washing straining on the line, the tops of trees bent one way. Nobody watches air; they watch what it moves. The faults are named the same way: attraction, aversion and confusion are known by the words, thoughts and deeds they push out of us.
Defining an inner state by what it does is familiar today. Functionalism in philosophy of mind identifies mental states by their causal role, and many emotion researchers describe feelings as readiness to act: approach, avoid, freeze. The Nyaya chain from mistaken belief to craving and aversion to action sits close to the model used in cognitive behavioural therapy, where distorted thinking feeds emotion and emotion feeds behaviour. Counting speech as action also matches speech act theory, which treats promising or insulting as deeds. Where the parallel stops: the sorting of acts into merit and demerit that bear fruit later is a moral and religious claim with no scientific counterpart. And modern psychology does not treat every motive as a fault; whether all striving rests on some error remains a philosophical question, not a settled one.
