Rebirth, Defined

Nyaya Sutras 1.1.19

Meaning · English

Becoming after death is arising again.

The question is simple: when Nyaya speaks of rebirth, what exactly does it mean? The sutra answers in two words. Pretyabhava, literally 'becoming after having departed', is punarutpatti, 'arising again'. Vatsyayana's commentary unpacks each part. To 'arise', for the Nyaya, is for someone to become joined to a body, senses, a mind, a capacity to know, and feelings of pleasure and pain. To 'depart' is to let go of the set taken up earlier, in some class of living beings. To 'become' is to take up a new set, in that same class or another. The word 'again' marks repetition. Rebirth is not one event but a pattern. Vatsyayana adds that this chain of deaths and births has no beginning, and ends only in liberation, apavarga. So for the Nyaya, rebirth is not a ghost drifting somewhere. It is a repeated change of equipment by a self that, as the Nyaya holds elsewhere, stays the same throughout.

Think of someone who moves flats every few years. They hand back the keys, leave the furniture and fittings behind, and sign for a new furnished place, sometimes in the same block, sometimes across town. The person is the same; the rooms are not. For the Nyaya, the furnished flat is the body, senses and mind, and moving in is what birth means.

Read today, the sutra does two separable things. First, it defines before it argues. It fixes what a term will mean so that any later debate has a clear target, which is sound practice in any logic course. Second, it assumes a self that persists while bodies come and go. Here mainstream science parts company. Neuroscience finds memory, personality and awareness tied closely to a working brain, and there is no established evidence that a person continues into a new body. Philosophers of personal identity, from Locke on memory to Parfit on psychological continuity, ask the very question Nyaya answers: what makes someone the same person over time? They reach different answers. Whether consciousness can be fully explained by the brain, the hard problem, remains open, so the debate is not closed from either side.
