The Mark of Pain

Nyaya Sutras 1.1.21

Meaning · English

Pain is that whose mark is hurting and holding back.

For the Nyaya, there are twelve things a person must know correctly in order to become free, and pain is one of them. So the sutra asks a simple question: what makes something pain? Gautama answers in a single compound. Pain, duhkha, has as its defining mark badhana, which means being pressed, hurt and hindered. Whatever torments or obstructs is pain. That is its sign, the feature that picks it out from everything else. Vatsyayana, the earliest commentator, glosses badhana as affliction and burning distress. Then he widens the claim. Whatever is bound up with pain and cannot be separated from it is also called pain, because it comes joined to it. On that reading even pleasant things count, since none of them arrives entirely free of it. He then traces a sequence. Someone who sees that everything is shot through with pain, including birth itself, grows weary. Weariness becomes letting go of craving, and letting go becomes release. So the definition has a purpose. For the Nyaya, seeing pain clearly is the first step toward ending it.

A warm wool sweater with one burr caught in the lining. You stop noticing the warmth and notice only the scratch, and soon the whole sweater is something you want off. The wool has not changed. The irritation travelling with it decides how you treat it. That is the move here: pain is what chafes and holds back, and whatever comes bound to it gets counted as pain too.

As a definition, the sutra holds up well. It picks out pain by what it does rather than by where it is felt, which is close to a modern operational definition. Clinicians today treat pain as both a sensation and an emotional experience. They routinely ask how much it interferes with sleep, work and movement, which is near to 'what hurts and hinders'. Psychology also separates the raw signal from the distress around it, and Nyaya likewise counts mental affliction as pain. The commentary's wider step is different. The claim that everything is shot through with pain is an evaluative and religious judgement, not an empirical finding. Well-being research finds that many people rate their lives as mostly good. Whether loosening craving reduces suffering is still being actively studied. Release from rebirth has no modern counterpart.
