Meaning · English

Doubt is a wavering judgment that waits for a distinguishing mark. It arises from a feature shared by several things, from a feature peculiar to one, from conflicting claims, and from seeing and not-seeing that settle nothing.

What is doubt, and where does it come from? For the Nyaya, doubt (samshaya) is a wavering judgment (vimarsha). The mind swings between two or more options and cannot settle, because it is waiting on a distinguishing mark (vishesha). The sutra names five sources. First, a shared feature. Vatsyayana's example is a tall upright shape: post or man? Height and girth fit both, so you hunt for the telling detail. Second, a feature unique to one thing. Sound arises when things come apart, a trait nothing else has. So which class does sound belong to: substance, quality or action? Third, conflicting views. One school says a self exists, another denies it, and no reason yet decides between them. Fourth, seeing that settles nothing. Water is seen in ponds, but also in a mirage. Fifth, not-seeing that settles nothing. Roots underground exist unseen, and things not yet made or already destroyed are unseen too. What follows is that doubt has a structure. Name the mark it waits on, and you know what to look for.

1. Today, the next time you catch yourself undecided, write the two options on one line. 2. Ask which of the five sources it comes from: a shared feature, an odd feature, conflicting voices, a sighting you cannot trust, or an absence that proves nothing. 3. Write down the one detail that would settle it, the mark your doubt is waiting for. 4. Spend five minutes checking that single detail before you choose.

Modern epistemology agrees that suspending judgment is its own attitude, distinct from simply lacking information. The Nyaya picture fits that well. Cognitive science treats perception as inference under uncertainty, and the post-or-man case is a textbook ambiguous stimulus resolved by further cues. The mirage is the old argument from illusion, still discussed in the philosophy of perception. The point about not-seeing matches the familiar rule that absence of evidence counts only when you would expect to find evidence. Disagreement among informed parties is a live, unresolved debate today. Where it differs: modern accounts often treat belief in degrees, as probabilities, not a two-way swing. Peirce's view that genuine doubt needs a real occasion, unlike Descartes's doubt by method, sits close to the Nyaya.
