Common Ground for Argument

Nyaya Sutras 1.1.25

The example is that thing about which the understanding of ordinary people and of examiners is the same.

Every argument needs somewhere to stand. Gautama calls that place the drishtanta, the example. A laukika is an ordinary person. A parikshaka is an examiner, someone able to test claims. Buddhi-samya means sameness of understanding. For the Nyaya, an example is a case that both groups see the same way. Vatsyayana explains the two groups. Ordinary people have not risen above common understanding, either by natural gift or by training. Examiners can test a matter through reasoning and through the pramanas, the accepted means of valid knowledge such as perception and inference. When the expert and the layperson agree on a case, it is no longer in dispute between them. Vatsyayana then gives three uses. A rival claim can be refuted by showing that it clashes with the example. One's own claim can be supported by showing that it fits the example. And the example provides the illustration step in the five-part argument. Debate does not begin from nothing. It begins from what neither side can sensibly deny.

Two neighbours argue about where their shared fence should stand. Neither trusts the other's pacing. They agree to measure from the old stone post that both families have known for decades. That post is the example. It is not part of the quarrel. Both sides accept it, so each claim can be checked against it, whether that claim comes from the surveyor or from the homeowner.

Modern argumentation theory makes a similar point. A dispute can be settled only from premises both parties already grant. Aristotle's dialectic started from widely held opinions for the same reason, and critical-thinking courses today teach people to find common ground before they disagree. On this point the Nyaya view holds up well. Two caveats from modern epistemology apply. First, the agreement of experts and laypeople is a good sign that something is true, but it is not proof. Cognitive science shows that whole groups can share the same perceptual or reasoning error. Second, an argument that leans on one agreed case is a kind of induction, and Hume showed that moving from observed cases to a general rule is never strictly guaranteed. How far a shared example can carry a general claim remains an open question.
