Lie face down. Set the two feet apart, place them on the back, and hold them with both hands. Draw in the belly and the mouth fully and firmly. This, the yogis say, is the camel seat.

The name comes from ushtra, camel, and asana, seat or posture. The text's heading simply reads 'now, the camel'. The camel's hump and long arched neck are the picture the name asks you to keep in mind. Gheranda gives the form in a few plain strokes. First, the practitioner lies on the belly. The feet are set a little apart and brought up onto the back, so the knees bend and the soles come toward the buttocks. The hands reach back and hold the feet. Then comes the one inner instruction: draw in the belly and the mouth, 'well' and 'firmly'. The text does not say how the mouth is drawn in, and it names no breath, no count and no length of stay. Last, it gives the name: this is what the yogis call the camel. This is not the pose most people now call camel. Today's camel is done kneeling, and the text's form is done lying on the belly. The cue for the belly, a firm drawing in, stays the same. Gheranda teaches the body in a chain of animal and creature shapes, and each shape is a way of holding the trunk. The camel's shape here is a long arch of the front body, held by the hands and steadied by the belly. The text asks a practitioner for firmness without strain, and for hands that hold the feet rather than pull them.

The lesson shows the kneeling camel, the form taught today, not the face-down form in the text. These steps follow the lesson. 1. Kneel upright with the knees hip-width apart. Rest your hands on your hips. 2. Breathe in. Move the hands to the lower back, fingers pointing down, and lift the chest. 3. Breathe out. Lean back and reach the hands down to the heels, one at a time. Keep the hips over the knees, not behind them. 4. Stay here. Open the chest toward the sky. Breathe slowly in and out through the nose. Stay for a few slow breaths. 5. If the heels are far away, keep the hands on the lower back instead. Let the neck stay soft, with the gaze resting gently forward or slightly up. 6. To come out, breathe in. Bring the hands back to the lower back and come up slowly, leading with the chest, not the head. 7. Sit back on the heels and rest. Breathe normally until the breath settles. The pose has no other side, because both sides work together. Fine points: the arch should come from the whole length of the spine and the front of the thighs, not from a hinge in the lower back. Keep the belly gently drawn in, which echoes the text's cue. Never drop the head back to force the neck down. Learn this with a teacher present if you can, because a page cannot see your lower back.

Kneeling camel is a backbend. The front of the body lengthens: the thighs, the hip flexors, the belly and the chest. The muscles along the back of the spine, the buttocks and the backs of the thighs hold you up and shape the arch. The shoulders open as the arms reach back, and the upper back is asked to extend, which most people use little. Keeping the hips over the knees spreads the curve along the whole spine. If the hips slide back, the lower back takes all of the bend. The drawn-in belly, the one cue the text gives, gives the lower back some support. The breath moves differently here. The chest is stretched open, so the breath tends to be shallow and high. That is why the lesson asks for slow breathing. Breathing in while lifting the chest, and out while going back, ties the movement to the breath. For the mind, the shape asks for steady attention. Balance, the neck and the far-off heels all need watching, and wandering thoughts have little room. The tradition's own account, in other texts, places such shapes within its view of prana and the body's inner fire. Gheranda gives no such explanation for this verse.

Gheranda attaches no fruit to the camel. The verse gives the form and the name and stops. The claims in the neighbouring verses belong to other seats, and the camel is not credited with them. The schools that teach the kneeling camel today say it opens the chest, stretches the front of the body and lifts a slumped posture. Those are modern teachers' words, not the text's.

A tailor has spent the morning bent forward over a worktable, shoulders rolled in, hips shut. When she kneels and leans back into a camel, the stretch she feels in her chest and thighs is real, and it counters the posture of her work. That much agrees with today's understanding. Gentle backbends lengthen muscles at the front of the hips and chest and give the upper spine practice at extending. Slow breathing during a held pose generally calms the body and makes it easier to notice strain early. Care about the neck and lower back is also well founded, since extreme backbends press on those places. The face-down form in the text is closer to a prone backbend. Kneeling camel, as taught now, is a later teaching and not the text's own. Nothing in the text's silence on benefits is contradicted by modern understanding. The traditional idea of inner fire, and any link between this seat and it, has no match in physiology. Claims of effects on organs or digestion from this pose are the tradition's own and are not shown by current understanding.

This is not medical advice. A teacher can correct what a page cannot, and any pain, tingling or dizziness is a signal to stop. Camel is learnt with a teacher, not from a page. Take particular care, or leave the pose out, with a disc problem or a painful lower back, with neck trouble, with high or low blood pressure, with dizziness or a recent surgery, and in pregnancy. Sore knees need a folded blanket under them. If the hands do not reach the heels, never force them, and never drop the head back to make up the distance. Do not go deeper than you can breathe slowly.

Gentler: keep the hands on the lower back throughout, as the lesson allows, and lift only the chest. Tuck the toes under so the heels sit higher and the hands reach them sooner. Rest a block on its tallest height beside each foot and reach for it instead. A folded blanket under the knees eases the joints. Fuller: with the hands on the heels, press the hips forward and lift the chest higher while the neck stays soft. Later, rest the tops of the feet flat, with the toes pointing back. The pose is symmetrical, so there is no mirrored side. The text's own face-down form is a different shape and is best learnt with a teacher.

1. Letting the hips slide back behind the knees puts all the bend in the lower back. Keep the hips over the knees and push them gently forward. 2. Dropping the head back crushes the back of the neck. Keep the neck long and soft, and let the gaze rest forward or slightly up. 3. Reaching for a heel by twisting or collapsing to one side. Reach for both together, or keep the hands on the lower back. 4. Holding the breath. Breathe in to lift and out to lean, then breathe slowly while you stay. 5. Squeezing the buttocks hard. Keep them firm but not clenched, with the belly gently drawn in. 6. Coming up fast. Return with the hands on the lower back and lead with the chest.
