Unwavering Discernment

Yoga Sutras 2.26

Meaning · English

Discernment that holds steady, without wavering, is the means by which the bond is let go.

Four words carry the sutra. Viveka is discernment, the act of telling two things apart. Khyati is seeing or knowing, so viveka-khyati is clear insight into the difference between the one who sees and what is seen. Aviplava means without wavering, unscattered, not washed away. Hana is leaving behind or removing. Upaya is a means, a way to reach something. Read whole, the sutra says that clear insight into that difference, kept steady, is how the bond ends. Patanjali says it here because the sutras just before it name suffering's cause as unwisdom and its end as the bond dissolving. A reader then needs to know what actually does the dissolving. His answer is not belief or effort of will. It is seeing, and seeing that does not flicker. A glimpse that comes and goes leaves the old mistaking in place. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes the discernment to be the knowing that seer and seen are distinct, and says that once it is steady the false knowing no longer returns. The commentators after him agree on the means and differ mainly on how they describe its steadiness.

A jar of pond water stands on a table with mud swirled through it. Shake it and it clouds again. Left alone, the mud sinks and the water shows clear to the bottom. Discernment works like that stillness. A clear sight of the difference between seer and seen has to be left undisturbed, or the old mixing rises again.

1. Once today, when worry or irritation rises, stop for three slow breaths and name it silently: "this is a feeling, and I am watching it." 2. Notice who is doing the watching. Do not argue about it. Just notice that something is aware of the feeling. 3. Tonight, spend five minutes recalling the moment. Note how long the clear watching lasted and what pulled you back into the feeling.
