Meaning · English
The dwellers of heaven hold qualities never seen before, belonging to the one who holds that place. The visitor goes there and looks at them, just as a well-trained student here looks over what he has been taught to see.
Four words carry it. Apurva means not seen before, from purva, earlier. Sthanin means one who holds a place, from sthana, a standing-place; in this book sthana also means a state of experience, such as waking or dream. Svarganivasin is a dweller in heaven. Sushikshita means well taught, from shiksha, training. Gaudapada says the dwellers of heaven have qualities that belong to whoever holds that place, and these are new to a visitor. The one who goes there simply looks at them, as a well-trained student looks over a place he was prepared for. Each clause makes one point. The contents are new. They belong to the place, not to the visitor's old life. And the visitor takes them in calmly and skilfully. The commentators read this as describing how an experiencer enters a state and meets what belongs to it. It is taught here because of an obvious objection: if dream things are called unreal, why are they so fresh and surprising? Gaudapada answers that newness is what any visit brings. Being surprised by something does not show it stands apart from the one who sees it. The teaching asks the listener to hold that thought up against waking life as well.
A child is taken to a grandmother's house in a distant town for the first time. The rooms, smells and cupboards are all new to her, yet she walks through them easily, knowing how to be a guest. Newness belongs to the place she has entered; it does not make the place a separate thing from her visit.
1. Tonight, before sleep, remember one thing from today that surprised you. Spend one minute on it. 2. Ask: did the surprise come from the thing, or from my meeting it for the first time? 3. Tomorrow, when you enter an unfamiliar room, shop or street, stay a minute at the door and watch how quickly you begin to move through it as if you knew it.
A young man steps out on his first morning in a hostel in a city he has never visited. The smells, the language on the signs and the layout of the streets are all unfamiliar. Within an hour he is crossing roads and reading the menu. Gaudapada's comparison speaks to this moment. The newness is real as experience, and it belongs to the place he has entered. It also does not stay strange for long. Step by step: he first notices the unfamiliar thing, then names it, then moves through it like a well-prepared student. By evening the strange street is just the way to the bakery. Ordinary experience confirms how fast this happens, and how little the strangeness of a thing tells us about what it is. The text uses this to say that surprise alone does not prove a thing stands apart from the one who meets it. The comparison does not promise that the newcomer feels at home, or that homesickness, fear or a bad night's sleep will pass because he understands it. It does not replace a doctor if the dizziness or dread is more than travel tiredness.
