Even in dream, what the mind imagines inside is unreal. What the mind takes hold of outside seems real. Yet both are seen to be unreal. In waking too, what the mind imagines inside is unreal, and what the mind takes hold of outside seems real. Here too it is fitting to say that both are unreal.
Three words carry it. Kalpita means imagined, fashioned, from klp, to arrange or shape. Asat means not-being: here, having no standing of its own. Vaitathya means unreality, from tathya, as-it-is, with vi- for departing from it. Gaudapada first takes dream. Inside, the mind makes pictures: a remembered face, a fear. Outside, the mind grasps a field, a house, a stranger who seems to stand apart from you. Gaudapada says both belong to the dreamer's mind. He then says the same of waking. Inner thoughts are imagined, and the things we perceive outside are also held only through the mind. The dream half carries the point that the sense of outsideness proves nothing. A dream house feels solid and external too. Waking is then set beside it, and Gaudapada calls the same verdict fitting. Unreal here does not mean nothing is experienced. The experience is real as experience. What is denied is that these things stand on their own, apart from the knowing of them. The commentators read the teaching as a question about what really lasts, and note that the first half of each line asks only for honesty: if outer things can be wrong in dream, being outer is no proof. Readers may notice the family likeness to the mind-only thinkers of his age, such as Vasubandhu, though Gaudapada reaches for one Self behind both. It asks the listener to look at what is actually given in seeing.
A woman reads a novel and pictures the hero's face. Later she watches the film and sees an actor on a screen. One face was made inside her, the other seemed to arrive from outside, yet both reached her only as pictures in her seeing. Inner imagining and outer grasping are the two faces.
1. Tonight, when you lie down, recall one scene from today you replayed in your mind, and one thing you actually saw with your eyes. 2. Ask of each: how did this reach me? Only through my own knowing? 3. Spend two minutes on this, then stop. 4. Tomorrow morning, when a dream fades, notice how real it felt while it lasted, and what told you it was a dream.
A man lies awake at two in the morning, rehearsing an argument with his brother. His jaw is tight and his pulse is up. The brother is asleep three towns away. Then he remembers last week's real conversation, which was quieter than the one in his head. Ordinary experience confirms that the body answers imagined scenes almost as it answers real ones: a frightening dream leaves the heart racing after waking. The verse would have him take the imagined argument as made inside, and notice that the brother he met outside was also met only through his own seeing and remembering. Step by step: he names the scene as imagined, feels the body settle a little, and keeps the real talk for daylight. Gaudapada's teaching goes further than this. It holds that waking things too lack standing apart from the knowing of them, and that is the text's claim, not a tip for sleeplessness. The verse does not stop the worry from returning, does not remove a real quarrel, and does not replace a doctor if sleeplessness persists.
