If both states, waking and dream, hold only unreal differences, who is it that perceives these differences? Who is the one that imagines them? The self, the shining one, imagines itself by itself, through its own maya. That same self perceives the differences. This is the settled conclusion of Vedanta.
Two words carry the verse. Bheda means difference, from bhid, to split: the cutting of one thing into many, this and that, me and you. Maya means the power by which what is one appears as many, from ma, to measure out. Atman is the self, the one who is aware in every state. Gaudapada has just said that the differences seen in waking and in dream are unreal in his sense: they are real as experience, but they have no standing apart from the mind that sees them. A hard question follows. If none of it stands on its own, who sees it, and who made it up? He asks both questions plainly, as an opponent would. He answers in one line. The self imagines itself, by itself, through its own maya. Nothing outside it is needed. The maker, the material and the one who looks are the same. Shankara reads this as the self taking on the appearance of many without ceasing to be one. Then Gaudapada says the same self perceives these differences, and calls this the settled conclusion of Vedanta. This is taught here to close a gap. Without it, the dream-world would seem to need a second thing to dream it. The verse asks the listener to stop searching for a separate author of experience, and to look at who is aware of it.
A child tells herself a story in the dark, gives each character a voice, and then gets frightened by the one she invented. Storyteller, characters and listener were always her. The self is the child, the differences are the characters, and maya is the telling.
1. Tonight, when a worry or an argument replays in your mind, pause for one minute and ask: who is watching this scene right now? 2. Notice that the watcher stays quiet and unchanged while the scene shouts. 3. Tomorrow morning, recall one dream and ask the same question: who saw it, and who made it? 4. Do not argue toward an answer. Only notice what is aware.
A woman lies awake at two in the morning, replaying a sharp remark her sister made at dinner. In her mind the sister speaks again, with a tone and a face she is partly supplying herself. She grows angry at a person who is asleep across town. The verse, as the text teaches it, would change this in steps. She would see that the scene on the screen is one the mind is composing. She would ask who is aware of the scene, and find that this awareness is not itself angry; it is only the place where the anger shows up. From there the remark can be looked at for what was actually said, apart from what the night has added. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: the mind does fill in faces, tones and motives, and a dream feels fully real while it lasts. The text goes further and teaches that the self is the one imagining and the one perceiving. That is its own teaching about who we are. It does not settle her quarrel, ease her tiredness, or replace a doctor if sleeplessness has become a habit.
