The Lord imagines many things: some stay within the mind, some are fixed as outside it. Whatever lasts only as long as the thought, within, and whatever is shared by two moments, without, all of it is imagined alone. The difference between them has no other cause.
Gaudapada takes two kinds of things and shows they are made the same way. The key words are these. Prabhu means the Lord, from bhu, to be, one who has power over what he brings about. Kalpana means imagining, a fashioning in the mind, from klrp, to arrange or shape. Citta means the mind that holds and presents what is known. In the first verse he says the Lord imagines things that are inside the mind and things that are fixed as outside it. In the second he sorts them by time. An inner thing, a passing thought or a picture in memory, lasts only as long as the thought of it. An outer thing, a pot or a tree, seems to be there for two knowers, or across two moments, and so feels solid and shared. Gaudapada says all of it is imagined. The only difference is in how it appears, and that difference has no separate cause behind it. This is taught here to answer a plain objection: if the outer world is a kind of imagining, why does it feel so different from a daydream? His answer is that feeling different is not proof of being made differently. Shankara reads the Lord here as the one Self imagining itself through its own power. The verse asks the listener to stop treating firmness as proof of a separate origin. Some Buddhist thinkers of his time argued in a similar direction about mind and appearance, though each school reached its own conclusions.
A coin spun on a table looks like a solid grey ball for a moment, then slows and shows itself to be a flat disc. The ball and the coin were never two things. Inner and outer things are alike: one thing seen with different steadiness.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and call to mind a room you know well. Notice how it fades when you stop attending. 2. Then look at a real object in the room you are in, such as a cup. Notice that it stays when you look away and back. 3. Ask quietly what the actual difference was: only steadiness and being shared. Do not decide anything; simply notice.
A woman sits in a hospital corridor at night while her father is in surgery. She keeps picturing the operating room, the surgeon's hands, the worst news. The picture feels almost as real as the plastic chairs around her. Her heart races as if the scene were happening in front of her. Gaudapada's teaching, said as his, is that inner and outer things are alike imagined, and differ only in how steady and shared they appear. Held lightly in that moment, it lets her sort what she is seeing: the chair is there when she looks away and back, and the surgery picture is a thought that comes and goes. She can set the picture down, feel the chair under her, and breathe. Ordinary experience confirms that a vivid fear can move the body as if it were present. The limit is plain: this does not make the surgery go well, does not remove her fear or any grief that may come, and she should still listen to the doctors and the staff, who can tell her what is actually happening.
