Whatever is dim within and whatever is sharp outside, all of it is imagined. The difference lies only in the instrument of perceiving. First the living soul is imagined. After it come things of many kinds, outer and inner. As one's not-knowing is, so is what one remembers.

Three words carry it. Kalpita means imagined, from klp, to fashion or arrange: put together by the mind, not simply made up. Jiva means the living individual, the one who feels "I am this person, born, and going to die." Avidya means not-knowing, the missing sight of what one's own self is. Gaudapada teaches that what is faint inside and what is vivid outside are alike fashioned. A vague dread and a solid table seem to belong to different orders. He says the difference lies only in the means by which each is known, the inner by the mind and the outer by the senses. Shankara takes the difference to be only in the instrument. Then he gives the order of arising. First the jiva is imagined, the one who sees. After it come the many kinds of things, outer and inner. Last, as the not-knowing is, so is the smriti, the memory or stored impression. What appears follows what has been taken in and carried. It is taught here because the second chapter asks how waking differs from dream. Gaudapada's answer is that sharpness and sharing do not lift the waking world out of experience. Vasubandhu's mind-only teachers also set dream beside waking, though Gaudapada's end is the one self. The listener is asked to stop reading sharpness as proof that a thing stands apart from the seeing of it.

A film runs in a dim room. One scene is blurred and grey, the next is bright and crisp. Both are only light on the same cloth screen. The faint inner scene and the sharp outer one are alike pictures in the one seeing, differing in clearness and in how they are received.

1. Tomorrow morning, before getting out of bed, call back one dream, even a scrap, for about a minute. 2. Ask how real it felt while you were in it. Notice whether any doubt arose at the time. 3. Later in the day, hold a vague worry beside something clear in front of you, such as a cup or a wall. Notice that both are things you are seeing, one faintly and one sharply.

A woman wakes at three in the morning, heart pounding. She was shouting at her late father in a kitchen that looked exactly like the one he owned. The kitchen was sharp, his face was clear, and the anger felt entirely outside her. Then the bedroom settles and the dream goes grey. Gaudapada's teaching changes the next minute in steps. First, she can notice that the dream scene felt as solid as the room she is lying in now, and that nothing inside the dream told her otherwise. Second, she can see that the worry she carries into the day, a vague picture of what her brother will say about the house, is built from the same stuff as the dream: remembered faces and old impressions. Third, the text teaches that even the clear things of waking are known only through the seeing of them, and the difference is in the instrument of knowing, not in a harder kind of reality. This does not dissolve the grief behind the dream, and it does not settle the real conversation about the house. Ordinary experience does confirm that a vivid dream can feel fully real while it lasts.
