Steady Wisdom Through Restraint
Bhagavad Gita 2.68
Meaning · English
Therefore, mighty-armed Arjuna, the person whose senses are completely held back from their objects has wisdom that stands fixed and firm.
Krishna closes the argument with a therefore. Three words carry it. Indriya means a sense, the power of seeing, hearing, tasting and the rest. Indriya-artha means the sense object, the thing each sense reaches toward. Prajna means transcendental knowledge, a settled understanding. Pratishthita means fixed, standing in place, like a post sunk in the ground. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person whose senses are held back from their objects, and held back sarvashah, completely, not in one corner while another stays loose, has knowledge that stays fixed. The reason runs back through what he has just said: when senses roam and the mind follows them, understanding is carried off. So the cure is the reverse. Hold the senses, and understanding stays where it is. He calls Arjuna mighty-armed, a warrior who already knows what strength costs, and gives him a task fit for that strength. Shankara reads the restraint as a discipline that serves the knowledge of the Self. Ramanuja reads it as part of steady devotion and meditation on the Lord. Madhva places it within worship and the grace of God. All three agree the knowledge must stay fixed, not flicker.
A tent pole driven deep into the ground holds the canvas steady however the wind pulls at the corners. A loose pole leans with every gust. Restrained senses are the deep-set pole, and wisdom is the canvas that stays up.
1. Choose one sense that pulls you most, perhaps the phone screen or snacks, and name it tonight. 2. Tomorrow, pick one stretch of thirty minutes and keep that sense away from its object entirely: phone in another room, food out of reach. 3. When the pull arrives, note where you feel it in your body and what thought comes with it. Do not argue, just watch. 4. Afterward, write one line on how clear your thinking felt compared with a usual half hour.
A man sits at his mother's hospital bedside at night, deciding whether to agree to a risky operation. His phone lights up with messages and news. Each glance pulls his attention away, and the question that matters gets thinner with every pull. The verse asks for a restraint of the senses so that the one clear understanding stays in place. Step by step: he turns the phone face down, sits with the doctor's plain words, and lets the question return again and again until it settles. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind pulled in many directions judges poorly, and that quiet, steady attention helps a hard decision. The verse does not promise the right answer, and it does not remove fear or grief. It is no substitute for the doctor's advice, which he still needs. What it offers is a mind steady enough to hear that advice. The old idea of prajna as settled transcendental knowledge has no direct modern counterpart, and it is the text's own teaching.
