Two Kinds of Waking

Bhagavad Gita 2.69

Meaning · English

What is night for all beings, in that the self-controlled one is awake. That in which all creatures are awake is night for the sage who sees.

Krishna uses night and waking as a way to say that two people can stand in the same world and see different things. Three words carry it. Niśhā is night, the time when things go unseen. Sanyamī is the self-controlled one, from sam, together, and yam, to hold: someone whose senses are held in hand. Muni is the sage, one who reflects and sees steadily. The plain sense: what most beings are wide awake for, such as pleasure, gain and standing, is dark to the sage, who pays it no attention. And what ordinary beings never notice, the inner self and the steadiness of mind, is where the sage is awake. Krishna says this because Arjuna has just heard that a fixed mind is rooted in restrained senses. The question that follows is why such a person looks so unlike everyone else. The answer is that the two are looking at different things. What he asks of Arjuna is to see where his own attention goes and what it is awake to. Shankara reads the waking as knowledge of the Self, and the night as the ignorance of those who chase objects. Ramanuja reads it as awareness of the Self and of God against absorption in matter.

Picture a small town at three in the morning. Most windows are dark, but one baker's light is on, flour on the counter, bread rising. To the sleepers the hour is empty; to the baker it is the working day. Likewise, what the crowd runs after is dark to the sage, and what the crowd misses is his day.

1. Tonight, before bed, write down the three things that held your attention most today. 2. Next to each, note whether it was something you chose or something that pulled you. 3. Tomorrow, pick one pull, such as a feed or a worry, and for ten minutes give your attention to something quieter, like a walk or a slow cup of tea. 4. Notice what felt vivid and what felt dull, without judging either.

A man sits on a night bus home after a day of chasing a promotion that went to someone else. Around him, people scroll, argue on calls, and fret over the same sort of scores. He feels the loss hard because everything he cared about was in that one contest. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First, the man sees that his hurt comes from what he was awake to, not only from what happened. Second, he asks what else he has been asleep to: his health, his family, the quiet of his own mind. Third, he lets his attention rest there for a few minutes, though the sting stays. The Gita offers this as a way of seeing, held by a sage over a lifetime, not as a quick fix. Ordinary experience does confirm that what we attend to grows large and what we ignore fades. The verse does not promise that disappointment will vanish, that grief will lift, or that medical help is unneeded when a low mood lingers.
