Peace Like an Ocean
Bhagavad Gita 2.70

Meaning · English
As waters enter an ocean that is filled from every side and stays undisturbed, so desires enter the one whose peace does not move. That person attains peace. The one who strives to satisfy desires does not.
Three words carry the verse. Apurya-mana means filled from all sides: the ocean is never short of water. Achala-pratishtha means undisturbed, literally fixed and not moving. Kama-kami joins kama, desire, with kami, one who chases it: a person whose life is spent running after wants. Krishna tells Arjuna that rivers pour into the ocean all day and the ocean neither swells nor rushes to meet them. It is already full, so nothing arriving changes its level or its calm. Desires, he says, enter a steady person the same way. They arise, and they pass through without taking control. The person who strives to satisfy desires gets no such peace, because each fulfilled want makes room for the next and the chase never ends. The reason Krishna gives is the contrast itself: peace comes from being full and fixed within, not from emptying the list of wants one by one. What he asks of Arjuna is steadiness, a mind that can let wants come without being carried off by them. Commentators read the ocean differently. Shankara takes it as the knower of the Self, complete in itself. Ramanuja reads the steady person as one fixed on God. Madhva stresses that the wants arrive only by the Lord's will and leave the devotee unmoved.
Think of a deep harbor after a heavy rain. Streams from every street run into it, and the water level barely changes while a small pond nearby floods over its edges. The harbor is the steady mind, the streams are desires arriving, and the pond is the person whose peace rises and spills with every new want.
1. Today, when a want arises, such as a snack, a message to check or something to buy, name it silently: a stream has arrived. 2. Wait ten minutes before acting on it. Sit or keep working, and watch where the want goes. 3. Notice whether it faded, stayed or grew. Act on it afterward only if it is still worth acting on. 4. Tonight, recall one want from today that passed by itself and how that felt.
A man stands in the checkout queue of a late-night shop, phone in hand, his thumb hovering over a jacket he has no need for. He has already bought two things this week that he stopped liking within days. The verse would change the moment in small steps. He notices the want has arrived, as the water arrives. He sees he is not empty, since he has a coat and a full cupboard at home. He lets the want stand there for a few breaths rather than obeying it, and he puts the phone away or buys the jacket knowingly. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: a craving that is not fed often fades within minutes, and each indulgence tends to make the next craving come sooner. The verse does not promise that wants stop arriving, and it does not claim that hunger, need or the wish for a better life are wrong. It also does not cure compulsive buying, gambling or drinking, which can need a doctor or counsellor, and a person caught in them should seek one.
