The Self Untouched by Sorrow

Katha Upanishad 2.2.11

Meaning · English

As the sun, the eye of the whole world, is not stained by the faults of what the eyes see, so the one Self within all beings is not stained by the sorrow of the world, for it stands apart from it.

Yama is answering Nachiketas, who asked what lies beyond death. Three words carry the verse. Atman is the Self, the one who is aware in every living being. Lipyate means to be smeared or stained; its root sense is to be daubed, as with paste or oil. Duhkha is sorrow, pain, the sense of things going badly. The last word, bahya, means outside or apart. Yama says the sun is the eye of the whole world, because everything is seen by its light. Yet the sun is not made unclean by the filth it lights up. In the same way, the one Self dwelling within all beings is not made sorrowful by the world's sorrow, because it stands apart from it. The reason Yama gives follows the earlier verses: the Self enters every form, yet is not bound to any. A person who takes himself to be only the body and mind feels every blow as his own. Yama tells Nachiketas that the inner witness is not struck. The verse asks the listener to learn which part of himself suffers and which part only sees. Shankara reads the apartness as real: sorrow belongs to body, senses and mind, which are mistaken for the Self through ignorance, and the Self itself is never touched.

A man stands at a window in the evening and watches a quarrel in the street below. The lamp in his room lights the whole scene, yet the lamp is not angry, and no shouting enters it. The lamp stands for the Self, and the quarrel for the sorrow of the world.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet place and recall one small worry from today. 2. Say to yourself plainly, 'There is worry here, and I am aware of it.' Notice that the one who notices is not itself worried. 3. Tomorrow, when something stings, such as a sharp word or a delay, name it silently as it happens and keep that same gap for a few breaths. 4. Do not push the feeling away. Only notice where the watching stands.

A mother sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while her son is in surgery. Every thought runs toward the worst. Her hands shake, and she feels she has become the fear itself. The verse would change this moment by small steps. First, she could notice that she is watching the fear: the shaking hands, the racing thoughts, the tight chest. Second, the watching itself is quiet, though what it watches is not. The text teaches that this witness is the Self, and that it is not touched by what passes before it. Third, from that small distance she may breathe, drink water, and answer the nurse clearly. Ordinary experience agrees that a person who can step back a little from a feeling often acts more steadily than one who is swallowed by it. The verse does not promise that the fear will leave, that the surgery will go well, or that grief will be spared. It does not replace the surgeon, or a doctor for a mind that cannot rest. It speaks of what stays untouched, and does not remove what hurts.
