One Ruler, Many Forms

Katha Upanishad 2.2.12

Meaning · English

One master lives as the inner self of every being. He takes a single form and makes it many. The steady ones who see him seated within themselves have lasting happiness. For those who do not see him, there is none.

Three words carry the verse. Vashi comes from a root meaning to will or to hold in one's power. It names the one who rules without being ruled. Antaratman joins antar, within, with atman, the self: what a person most truly is, beneath body, mood and name. Dhira means steady. It describes someone whose understanding does not shake with every wind. Yama tells Nachiketas that there is one inner Self in all beings, and that it shows itself as many shapes while staying one. Those who see it seated in their own self, and not only out in the world, have happiness that lasts, which is the meaning of shashvata. Others do not. Yama gives this as the answer to the boy's real question, what remains when everything that changes has gone. Pleasure drawn from things passes with the things. Pleasure drawn from the Self that stays has nothing to pass away. The verse asks for a turning inward, a seeing from within and not only a looking out. Shankara reads the many forms as appearance, since the Self is one and undivided, and for him the seeing is the knowledge that this Self is one's own.

A full moon stands over a courtyard where ten pans of water sit. Each pan holds its own small moon, trembling or still, while the moon in the sky is only one. The pans are the many beings. The single moon is the one Self shining in each of them.

1. Today, while waiting in a queue or sitting on a bus, look at three strangers, one at a time, for a few seconds each. 2. Tell yourself quietly that the same awareness looks out through them as through you. 3. Notice any change in how you feel toward them, even a slight one. 4. Tonight, take two minutes in a quiet place and notice the one who is aware of the day. Do not describe it. Stay with it.

A woman stands pressed into a crowded train on the way home. Her feet ache. A man's bag keeps knocking her hip, and she is already resenting him. Yama's teaching changes the next minute in small steps. First she sees the man's face, grey with tiredness, and recognises her own wish to be home. Then the teaching says that the same Self looks out from him and from her, one in two shapes, and the line between them feels thinner. Her shoulders drop. The bag still knocks her, but it no longer reads as an insult. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: shared tiredness makes it harder to stay angry at someone. The limit is plain. The teaching does not give her a seat or ease her feet. It does not promise that one evening will bring the lasting happiness Yama speaks of. It offers a different way to stand in the crowd, and the rest is for her to test.
