Lasting Peace for the Steady
Katha Upanishad 2.2.13
Meaning · English
Among things that pass, one lasts. Among all who are aware, one is aware. Though single, it grants the wishes of many. The steady who see it seated within themselves have peace that stays. Others do not.
Yama answers Nachiketas with a few words worth taking slowly. Nitya means lasting, what does not change or end. Cetana means one who is aware; its root is the sense of perceiving, noticing. Yama calls the Self the lasting among the passing and the aware among the aware. Kama means wish or desire, and the text says this one fulfils the wishes of many. Dhira means steady, a person whose mind does not shake loose with every pull. Shanti means peace, a settling. Yama's reason follows from what Nachiketas has just refused. The boy turned down every pleasure Yama offered, because wishes are many and each one ends. Yama says there is something that does not end, and it is not far away: it sits in the one who looks. Only those who see it there, he says, have peace that stays. Others may have peace for an afternoon. Shankara reads the one as the Self, the same awareness in every living being, and reads seeing it within as knowing it as one's own Self, not as a separate god standing elsewhere. The verse asks the listener to turn from chasing the next wish and look at what is aware of all of them.
A village has one well. Every household comes with its own pot, in its own size, for its own need, and each goes home satisfied. The well does not change with the pots. The pots are the many wishes. The well is the single Self from which each draws.
1. Tonight, before sleep, spend two minutes recalling three wishes you had today, even small ones: a cup of tea, a reply, a rest. 2. Beside each, note whether it was met, dropped or forgotten, and how long it held you. 3. Then ask, once and slowly: what was aware of all three? Stay with that question for one minute without answering it. 4. Repeat for a week, and notice whether the awareness feels any different from the wishes.
A woman stands on a railway platform. Her train is ninety minutes late, and her sister's wedding begins without her. Wishes crowd in: let the train come, let the delay be short, let no one be angry. Each wish changes by the minute, and each leaves her more tense than the last. Yama's teaching, as the Katha gives it, asks for one small turning. She can notice that every wish passes through an awareness that was there at breakfast and will be there tonight. She does not need to end the wishing. She only sees who is watching it. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind which steps back from a worry often feels less gripped by it. The Katha goes further and says that this watcher is the lasting Self, and that those who see it in themselves find peace that stays. It does not promise the train will come sooner, nor that she will feel nothing about the wedding. It does not remove grief or fear, and it offers no cure where a doctor is needed. It speaks of where steadiness is found.
