Meaning · English
Those who lift up a brahmin in distress, one whose whole refuge is me, I will soon lift out of their own troubles, as a boat lifts people out of the ocean. A king should lift all his subjects out of misfortune, as a father lifts his children. The steady one lifts himself by himself, as the lord of elephants lifts the elephants. A king of this kind, in an aerial car bright as the sun, shakes off every inauspicious thing here and rejoices with Indra.
Three words carry the passage. Samuddhara means to lift up and carry across; it is what you do for someone sunk in mud or water. Vyasana is misfortune, the thing that throws a person off their feet. Dhira is the steady one, who is not shaken by what is happening around him. Krishna first speaks of a brahmin in distress who has made Krishna his only refuge. Whoever lifts such a man, Krishna says, he will soon lift out of their own troubles, the way a boat carries people over an ocean. The help given is returned in kind. This is the Bhagavata's picture of the society of its age, in which a brahmin lived on gifts and had no other safety net. Then the duty widens. A king should lift all his subjects out of misfortune, as a father does his children. A father does not ask whether the child deserves rescue. The king must also lift himself by himself, steady, the way the lord of the elephants guards the herd. The ruler's own steadiness comes before his care for others. Last, Krishna describes the reward. A king of this kind shakes off all that is inauspicious here, travels in a sun-bright car and rejoices with Indra. The passage answers a plain question: what does power owe to those beneath it? Krishna's answer is rescue, offered as a father offers it. What still speaks is the pairing of care for others with a steady hold on oneself.
A neighbour hears water running in a flooded cellar, fetches a long ladder and lowers it through the window to the person trapped below. Strength used to lift another out of trouble, not to stand above them, is what the verses mean by a ruler's duty.
1. Today, think of one person near you who is in some trouble: a neighbour, a relative, someone you work beside. 2. Ask them plainly what would help, and listen for ten minutes without fixing anything yet. 3. Do one small, practical thing for them before the week ends, and say nothing about it afterwards. 4. Tonight, pick one trouble of your own and take one small step on it yourself.
A school headteacher notices that a pupil has stopped bringing lunch. She has heard the boy's father lost his job last month. In the moment, the verses would change her order of actions. First she steadies herself, because a flustered adult makes a frightened child more frightened. Then she speaks to the boy privately, not in front of the class. Then she arranges a meal quietly, as a father would, without asking him to prove he deserves it. Ordinary experience bears this out: people in trouble are helped more by practical, unshamed help than by advice or pity, and a calm helper is easier to lean on. Krishna's promise of a sun-bright car and a place with Indra is the text's own teaching about what such a ruler gains, and it is told here as that. What the verses do not promise is that the father finds work, that the family's worry ends, or that one lunch repairs a household. They ask for the rescue, not for the outcome.
