Each day, as far as his means allow, the householder should worship the gods, the sages, the ancestors and all living beings as forms of Krishna. He does it through study of the Vedas, offerings to the ancestors and to the gods, gifts of food to creatures, and shared meals. The wealth he uses may come unasked, or be pure, or be fairly earned. He must not press the people who depend on him, and he should perform his sacrifices by right means alone.
Krishna names four groups to honour every day: the gods, the sages, the ancestors and the beings around the house. He calls them his own forms. Each has its own gesture. Svaha is the word spoken as an offering goes into the fire for the gods. Svadha is the matching word for the ancestors. Study of the Vedas pays the debt to the sages who handed the teaching down. Bali is a portion of food set out for creatures such as birds, animals and the hungry. The phrase 'as far as means allow' makes the practice fit the size of the house. A small offering counts as much as a large one. The second half is about money. The wealth for worship may come by chance, unasked, or it may be pure, or earned fairly. It must not be raised by squeezing servants, workers or dependents. The commentators read 'right means' as the whole test: a sacrifice paid for by someone else's hardship is not a sacrifice. Krishna teaches this to Uddhava as the householder's daily pattern. Home life can look like a plain round of earning and spending. Krishna makes it a round of gratitude and fair dealing. He asks the householder for a modest, regular payment of what he owes, and for clean hands.
A tree-lined lane where each house puts a bowl of water by the gate for passing birds and strays. The bowls cost little, and they are filled every morning. A household's daily offerings work the same way. A small, steady giving back to the sources it lives on, made from what it can honestly spare.
1. At your next meal, set aside the first small portion, a spoonful of rice or a piece of roti, for a bird, an ant line or a stray, and put it out before you eat. 2. Tonight, take one minute to say the names of two people who came before you and gave you something, such as a skill, a recipe or a home. 3. This week, look at one purchase you plan to make. Ask whether anyone who depends on you, or works for you, is being squeezed to pay for it. Notice how the answer feels.
A young father gets an unexpected bonus on a Thursday evening. He is already thinking of a new phone. Then he remembers his mother's pending dental bill and the part-time cook he has paid late twice this month. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, it asks where the money came from, and whether it came cleanly. Second, it asks who leans on him. The cook and his mother are in that circle, and their claim comes before the phone. Third, it asks for a small daily gesture of thanks, so that giving back becomes a habit, not a rare mood. Ordinary experience confirms that a regular small act is easier to keep than a large rare one, and that money spent without a thought for who bore its cost sits uneasily afterwards. The old teaching also treats this as worship of Krishna's own forms, which is its way of saying the giving is owed, not optional. It does not promise that one offering clears a debt, mends a strained family or replaces a dentist. It sets an order of care and leaves the decision with him.
