Let the wise man not cling to his household, and not grow careless in caring for it. Let him see all of it as perishable, even what he has not yet seen, as though he had seen it. Sons, wife, kin and friends: their meeting is the meeting of travelers on a road. Body after body they part, as a dream goes when sleep goes.

Four words carry the teaching. Sajjeta comes from a root meaning to hang on to something, so it is clinging. Pramada is carelessness, a drowsy slackness about what has been put in your charge. Nashvara means liable to perish, from a root for being lost. Svapna is the dream. Krishna tells Uddhava that the wise person does not cling to the household and also does not grow careless in it. Both halves count: care for the family fully, and do not grip it. Then he gives his reason. The wise person sees all of it as perishable, even what has not yet been seen. The commentators read this as the pleasures promised elsewhere, which pass just as the ones in front of us do. Then comes the picture. Wife, children, relatives and friends meet as travelers meet on a road. They share a stretch of it and part. With each new body the parting comes again, as a dream leaves with the sleep it belongs to. Krishna says this in the householder's teaching because the householder is the one most tempted to take a temporary arrangement for a permanent one. The question behind it is how to live fully in a home without being owned by it. The text asks the listener to keep doing the duty of love and to keep the parting in sight.

Water carried in cupped hands. Held gently, it can be carried a long way and shared. Clenched tight, it runs out between the fingers, and dropped carelessly, it spills. Family is the water: Krishna asks for open, steady hands, neither gripping nor slack.

1. Tonight, choose one person in your home and give them ten unhurried minutes, phone put away, listening more than talking. 2. Notice one worry about them that you grip hard. Name it silently, then do one small practical act of care instead, such as a call, a meal or a message. 3. Before sleep, bring one family face to mind and quietly thank them for walking this stretch of road with you.

A mother packs her son's suitcase the night before he leaves for a job in another city. She wants to press instructions on him, check his train three times, and sleep badly. Or she wants to go numb and busy, so the evening passes without her. Krishna's teaching offers a third way, step by step. First, she keeps doing what care asks: the pickle jar goes in, the warm shirt goes in. Second, she lets go of the idea that his life must stay beside hers, since partings are the ordinary way families go. Third, because the road is shared only for a while, she can sit with him at supper and be wholly there. Ordinary experience confirms that attention comes easier when we remember time is short. A family doctor would add that close bonds are good for health, while constant anxious checking only wears people out. The teaching does not take the ache out of the parting. It does not promise she will feel light at the station, only that the evening can be spent on love rather than on clutching.
