Reflecting in this way, free, living in the home like a guest, he is not bound by houses. He has no sense of "mine" and no swelling of ego. With the rites proper to a householder he has worshipped me, and he is devoted to me alone. He may stay on in the home, or go to the forest, or, if he has sons, take up the wandering life.
Krishna is closing his teaching on the householder's life. Three words carry it. Nirmama means "without mine": the pull of calling people and things my own. Nirahankrita means not building up an "I" around what one owns or does. Bhakti means loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. A guest uses the room, the food and the bed with thanks and care, and never thinks they are his. Krishna tells Uddhava to live in the home that way. Reflecting on how short everything is has already loosened the grip. So the home no longer ties him. Then comes the work: he does his household duties as worship of Krishna, and his heart is on Krishna alone. The last clause gives the exits. When his life has run its course he may stay, or go to the forest, or become a wanderer. The commentators treat these as open to him according to his situation. This is taught here because Uddhava wants to leave everything and follow Krishna. Krishna answers that the home is not the obstacle. Clinging is. What he asks is care without ownership, and a ready heart when the time to move on comes.
Think of a good guest in a friend's house. She washes her own cup, folds the blanket, and thanks the host. When the visit ends she leaves without a fuss. Krishna asks the householder to live like her: full care for the house, no claim over it.
1. Tonight, do one ordinary household task, such as washing dishes or sweeping, and dedicate it silently to Krishna. Do it carefully, as if for a guest. 2. When someone comes to your door this week, offer water or tea before anything else. 3. Pick one thing you call "mine" and notice, for a minute, how tightly you grip it. Then loosen your hand a little.
A man in his late fifties stands in the hallway of the house he has lived in for thirty years. The last child's wedding is over and the rooms are quiet. His sister asks whether he will sell and move somewhere smaller. He feels the question as an attack on his life. Krishna's picture of the guest changes the moment in steps. He can first see that the house served a purpose: it raised children and sheltered a household, and that work was real and worth doing. Then he can ask what the house is for now, instead of what it says about him. The decision becomes a practical one about space, cost, stairs and distance from people he loves. Staying or leaving are both acceptable answers, as in the text. Ordinary experience agrees that decisions made out of fear of losing a place are poorer than decisions made out of need. The teaching does not remove the sadness of leaving a home full of memory, and it gives no advice on money, health or law. For those he needs real people and real figures.
