Dattatreya Teaches Parasurama: Liberation Is Self Nature

Tripura Rahasya 18.1

The story · English

Dattatreya was still speaking to Parasurama, whom he calls Bhargava and Rama. He reminded him that awareness has now been shown to be empty of anything to be known. Many stages of realizing it have been described, he said, but people are bewildered by illusion and have no training for it. Only a subtle eye can hold that state. Then he said, "Why say more, Rama? Listen to the essence. The mind knows what is known, so the mind itself cannot be something known." A mind free of all objects is what we call pure knowing. It is knowing by its very nature, so it is always already known. To ask another act of knowing to confirm it would only send you groping without end.

Then Dattatreya turned the question on Parasurama. "When you look at anything, do you not shine, Bhargava? If you do not shine, you are not, so how can you even ask?" He teased him gently. "You are a flower in the sky, yet you want your own good? How shall I bring you to yourself? Think about it." Parasurama might answer, "I sense myself in a general way, but I do not know myself in particular." Dattatreya said that then your general nature is your changeless form, with no trace of particulars. "You know this, yet you are confused for nothing. Whatever lights up objects is itself beyond them. You shine by yourself."

"Suppose you say you appear as a body," said Dattatreya. "Listen. You appear as the body only through imagining it." He asked Parasurama to look closely with a subtle eye. If you imagine another person's body, does your own bodyhood show up in it? Then that body would also be yours. Whatever body you imagine becomes that body, so you are made of everything. How could you be only this one body? Dattatreya drew the conclusion: your body is something seen, and it cannot be what you are, because it keeps changing. You are the seeing itself, and seeing is never something seen.

Dattatreya went on. That awareness shines by its own light and has no trace of any seen form, though it paints the pictures of body, place and time in all their variety. "So drop imagining, and what remains beyond it is the pure form of consciousness. Recognize yourself there." Seen even once, what stays is the unnoticed ground, and ignorance, the cause of all worldly wandering, dissolves. Liberation is not in the sky, not in the underworld, not on earth. Once imagining is dropped, it is simply the spreading of your pure nature. Since it is your own nature you never lacked it. The only work is to remove confusion.

He said no other liberation can be imagined. Anything made can be destroyed, and a liberation apart from your nature would be like a hare's horn. Your nature is full everywhere, so where could another liberation fit? Any liberation shows up inside it, like a reflection in a mirror. Even in the world, liberation means the loss of bondage, and that loss is an absence. How can the truth be made of absence? Nothing is both being and non-being. Dream things are like that, he said, and one might say they are real because they get sublated. Dattatreya answered that sublation is the notice of absence, so what can be sublated is unreal.

Everything seen, said Dattatreya, is cancelled when its perception stops. So it is unreal, standing between being and nothing. But the principle of consciousness is never touched by absence anywhere, so it alone is real. Liberation apart from it cannot be true. Liberation is the full nature spreading out once, and consciousness is called full when objects are dropped. The appearance of objects is its contraction. Can time or anything else limit it? If the limit is unknown, it is not established. If it is known, consciousness already pervades it. Whatever lies outside consciousness cannot be proved, since it would have no link to it. So everything sits immersed in consciousness, and that reflection cannot limit what it rests in.

Dattatreya finished: things in the world are not seen sitting inside other things in such a mix. So the outside object is rooted in confusion, and he asked what truth can things depending on it have. The one self, whose nature is consciousness, shines freely as all these forms and nothing more exists. Parasurama listened and asked again. "Master, what you say seems hard to square. Everyone sees two things, awareness and the known. Let the known be lit by awareness, as a pot is lit by a lamp and remains different from it. To say the known is itself consciousness is not what we experience."

Parasurama brought up what King Janaka had said earlier: dropping imagination makes the mind free of concepts, and that conceptless knowing destroys worldly life and is the self's own form. How can this be? The mind is the self's tool for knowing and acting. If it were not the self's, how would it differ from a dull thing? Bondage comes through the mind and so does liberation, so how is the mind the self? Even a conceptless state seems to leave duality. And if illusion is unreal, how does non-duality follow? Unreal things do nothing, yet all worldly things do work. If all is delusion, how can delusion differ from truth? "This doubt has turned in my heart for a long time." Hearing him, Dattatreya, who knew everything, was delighted by the good question and began to answer.
