Meaning · English

Whatever notion of things one is shown, that is what one sees. Becoming that notion's keeper, one guards it, and the grip of it settles on the person. Through these notions, which are not separate from the one reality, that one is marked out as if separate. Whoever knows this as it really is may imagine freely, without fear.

Three words carry the verse. Bhava means a state or notion of how things are, from bhu, to become. Graha means a grasp or hold, from grah, to seize. Kalpana, here the act of imagining, means shaping or arranging in the mind. Gaudapada's first line is plain. Show a person a notion of the world, and that is what the person sees. The second line says what follows. Having taken the notion on, the person becomes its keeper and defends it, and the grip of it comes to rest on him. A notion first offered then becomes his own, and he is held by it. The third line gives the reason. All these notions are, in his teaching, not apart from the one reality, yet each one makes that reality look separate and many. So the many is a mark laid on the one by the notions. The last line says what the knower does differently. One who knows this truly can still imagine, and so can still think, plan and speak in the world's terms, but without fear. The commentators read the fear as the fear of being held by one's own imagining. He teaches this after listing how each school of knowers sees the world its own way. The question behind it is why people disagree so firmly, and his answer is that each is shown a notion and then holds it.

A child is told a cloud looks like a dog. From then on she sees only the dog and will argue for its ears. The cloud never changed. The first notion given to her is the one she now guards, and it stands for each view held as the whole sky.

1. Today, pick one opinion you hold firmly about a person, a place or a job. 2. Ask where you first heard it, and whether someone showed it to you before you saw it yourself. 3. Spend five minutes with the person or thing and look for one detail that does not fit the opinion. 4. Say the opinion aloud with the words "I have been shown" in front of it, and notice whether your grip loosens at all.

A mother sits at a parent-teacher meeting while the teacher says her son is lazy. By evening she sees laziness in how he eats and how he ties his shoes. She has started defending the word, and when her husband says the boy worked hard on his model, she finds herself explaining it away. The verse speaks to this. The first step is that the notion was handed to her, and she did not reach it by watching. The second is that she became its keeper, and it now arranges what she notices. The third is that she can ask what she saw before the word arrived, and hold it as one account among others. She can then look at the boy again and judge from what is in front of her. Ordinary experience confirms that a label, once given, makes us notice what fits it. The verse does not say the teacher was wrong, and it does not tell the mother whether her son needs help with schoolwork. If something real is wrong, a doctor or teacher still needs to look into it. It only loosens the grip of the first word.
