The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 3 · Why Act at All
Nature Keeps You Moving
Bhagavad Gita 3.5
Meaning · English
No one can remain even for a moment without action. Every person is made to act, helpless, by the qualities born of material nature.
Three terms carry this. Karma is action, and it covers more than work: breathing, thinking, wanting, resting all count. Prakriti is material nature, the ground out of which body and mind are made. Guna means a quality or strand of that nature, a pull that shapes how a person is inclined. Krishna tells Arjuna that no one stands without action even for a moment. The word he uses for a person is avasha, helpless, meaning not in charge. The qualities born of nature push everyone into doing something, whether they have chosen it or not. The reason follows from the verses before. Arjuna wanted to escape by sitting still, and Krishna had already said that abstaining from action does not free anyone. Here he gives the ground for that: stillness of the kind Arjuna imagines is not on offer. Since action cannot be avoided, the question that remains is how to act. Shankara reads the verse as a warning to those who think they can drop all activity, since the body and mind keep working under nature's qualities. Ramanuja takes it to say that the self is by nature active and cannot be idle. Madhva stresses that the qualities work under the Lord's control. The listener is asked to drop the idea of doing nothing and look at how action is already happening.
A leaf dropped into a stream does not get to stay where it fell. The current carries it past stones and bends whether it intends to move or not. A person is like that leaf: nature's qualities are the current, and even a decision to do nothing is swept along in it.
1. Pick ten minutes today and try to do absolutely nothing: no phone, no book, no task. Sit in a chair. 2. Notice what keeps going anyway: breath, thoughts, an itch, a plan forming, a wish to get up. 3. Write down three of these on paper afterward. 4. Later in the day, when you feel pushed to act, such as reaching for a snack or a message, pause for one breath and name what is pushing.
A mother sits in a hospital corridor at night while her son is in surgery. She has been told there is nothing to do but wait. Yet she is not still. She paces, checks the clock, bites her nail, rehearses what she will ask the surgeon, drinks tea she does not want. Krishna's teaching on this point is that action never stops, because nature's qualities keep moving a person. In her corridor, the verse changes the question. Trying to be perfectly passive only adds a sense of failure to the fear. Seeing that the body and mind will act anyway, she can notice what she is doing and choose a small, steady act: sitting, breathing slowly, calling a relative. Ordinary experience bears out part of this: a mind and body awake and worried do not fall silent on command. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, or that her fear will ease because she has named it. It does not replace the surgeon's work or the comfort of another person beside her.
