The Hypocrite of Restraint
Bhagavad Gita 3.6
Meaning · English
Whoever holds back the organs of action, yet sits remembering the objects of the senses in the mind, that deluded soul is called a hypocrite.
Krishna takes up a particular kind of person: someone who has stopped the hands and feet but not the mind. Three words carry it. Karma-indriya means the organs of action: hands, voice, feet and the rest, the parts that do things. Smaran means to remember, to turn something over again and again. Indriya-artha means the objects of the senses, the sights, sounds, tastes and touches the senses reach for. Mithya-achara means false conduct, a life whose outside does not match its inside. The plain sense: a person sits very still, gives up the pleasures, and all the while the mind replays them. Krishna calls this vimudha, deluded, because the person believes the stopping has worked when only the visible part has stopped. The reason follows from the verses before it, where Krishna says no one becomes free by merely abstaining from action. Restraint that stays at the surface is only a posture. What he asks of the listener is honesty: to look at where the mind actually lives. Shankara reads the verse as a warning that outward renunciation without inner mastery is empty. Ramanujacharya reads it as pointing to the need for knowledge of the self alongside disciplined action. Madhva stresses that the fault is in the false show, not in the restraint itself.
A man at a restaurant tells the waiter he is not eating tonight, folds his hands in his lap, and then stares at the next table's plates, tracking every fork. His hands are still, but he is eating with his eyes. The still hands are the restrained organs of action. The staring is the mind remembering sense objects, and it is where the real hunger sits.
1. Pick one thing you have given up or are cutting back on, such as sweets, scrolling or late-night snacks. 2. Today, for ten minutes at a quiet time, sit and notice where your thoughts go when you are not doing it. 3. If the mind keeps returning to the thing, just note it, without scolding yourself: 'still thinking about it.' 4. In the evening, write one line on whether your outside and inside matched today.
A man has told his family he is off sweets for the month. At ten at night he sits in the kitchen, hands folded on the table, and the whole time he is picturing the box of jalebi on the shelf above him. He has not eaten one. He feels proud and miserable together. Krishna's teaching meets him here. First, it names what is happening without cruelty: the hands are quiet, the mind is not, and the gap is the problem. Second, it asks him to be honest about that gap instead of counting the days as a win. Third, it points him toward the working of the mind, which is where the real discipline has to go, rather than only to the cupboard. Ordinary experience bears out part of this: a mind kept hungry and watched all day tends to stay fixed on the thing it is denied, and tiredness makes the pull stronger. The verse does not promise that the craving will fade soon, and it is no replacement for a doctor or dietitian where a health condition, an eating difficulty or an addiction is involved.
