The reason is what establishes the thing to be proved through its likeness to the example. In the same way, it establishes it through unlikeness.
The question behind the sutra: in a formal argument, what turns a 'because' into a real reason? Gautama's answer is that the reason, hetu, proves the sadhya, the property to be proved, only by linking it to an example, udaharana. It can do this in two ways. The first is sadharmya, likeness: the subject shares a mark with a known case that clearly has the property. The second is vaidharmya, unlikeness: a known case that lacks the mark also lacks the property. Vatsyayana gives the standard illustration. Sound is impermanent, because it is produced, and whatever is produced is seen to be impermanent. That is the route of likeness. The route of unlikeness runs: what is never produced is permanent, as the self and such substances are. Either way, the reason has force only because the same mark has been observed somewhere outside the case in dispute. On this definition, then, a reason with no example behind it proves nothing.
A cook presses one grain of rice between finger and thumb. It squashes, the way every cooked grain she has eaten squashes. It does not resist the way the raw grains in the sack resist. The softness is the reason. 'The pot is done' is the claim. The remembered grains, cooked and raw, are the examples that give the softness its force.
Today's closest discussion is the logic of the syllogism and the study of induction. Like Aristotle, the Nyaya ties a claim to a general pattern. Unlike textbook formal logic, which separates a valid form from true premises, it insists the pattern be anchored in an observed instance. The two routes loosely recall John Stuart Mill's later methods of agreement and difference: check cases where the mark appears, and cases where it is absent. Cognitive science supports the value of the second route. People tend to look only for agreeing cases, and tasks like the Wason selection task show how often negative cases are missed. What stays open is Hume's problem: seeing that produced things perish does not, by itself, guarantee that every produced thing will.
