Example and Counter-Example
Nyaya Sutras 1.1.36
Meaning · English
The example is a familiar case which, by sharing the mark of what is to be proved, is seen to carry that property too. Or, by the reverse, it is the contrary case.
The question is what makes an example count as support rather than decoration. For the Nyaya, the example (udaharana) is a drishtanta, a familiar case anyone can check. There are two kinds. The similar example shares the reason with the thing under dispute, and it plainly has the property being claimed. The contrary example lacks the reason, and it also lacks the property. Vatsyayana gives the standard case. Sound is impermanent, because it is produced. Take a pot. It was made, and one day it breaks and is gone. In the pot we see the two features standing together: being produced and passing away. Seeing that link there, we infer it in sound. Now take the self, which the Nyaya holds is never produced. It is permanent. Where producedness is absent, impermanence is absent too. By the reverse, sound, which is produced, is impermanent. So the example's job is to put the reason and the conclusion side by side, where everyone can watch them go together.
You warn a friend that the new mug will break if it falls, because it is ceramic. Last week a ceramic plate shattered on that same floor. A steel pan, not ceramic, hit the floor and only bounced. The plate shows ceramic and breaking together. The pan shows neither together. The plate is the similar example, and the pan is the contrary one.
Aristotle's syllogism moves from a general premise and leaves out the example. Nyaya keeps the observed case in the argument itself, so a listener can check the link between reason and conclusion. Later Nyaya thinkers called that link vyapti, a rule that the reason always goes with the property. The term comes from later writers, not from this sutra. Pairing a positive case with a negative one is close to J. S. Mill's methods of agreement and difference. It also resembles the contrapositive in formal logic: if everything permanent is unproduced, then nothing produced is permanent. Hume's problem of induction still applies. A few pots and a self cannot prove that every produced thing perishes. How examples ever justify a general rule remains an open question. Debate teachers today use the same move: offer the case, then offer the case that breaks the pattern.
