Knowing Before Death

Katha Upanishad 2.3.4

Meaning · English

If a person is able to know it here, before the body falls apart, good. If not, then among the worlds of creation he is made fit to take on a body again.

Yama is still speaking of Brahman, the one reality from which the world goes forth, and which the self, the atman, is taught to be. Three words carry the verse. Boddhum means to know, from the root budh, to wake up. It is waking, not collecting information. Visrasah means a falling apart, a loosening, from a root for slipping and dropping. It is Yama's plain word for death. Sarga means creation, a letting-go-forth. The worlds of creation are the many realms in which beings are born. Yama's point is that the knowing is for here, in this life, while the body still holds together. Death is the deadline, and the verse does not pretend it is far off. The reason follows from the clause that ends it. One who has not woken to this is made fit, by the very state he is in, for another body in the worlds of creation. Yama gives it as a plain consequence, not a threat. Shankara reads the knowing as direct knowledge that the atman is Brahman, and reads the new body as one suited to the person's past actions and understanding. The verse asks the listener to treat this knowing as the work of the present, not something left for a later that may not come.

A student has one term to learn a language, and the term has a last day. Those who have learned it walk out and need no more classes. Those who have not enrol again and sit in the same classroom. The term is this life, and the last day is the body falling apart.

1. Choose one time today, perhaps the first five minutes after waking, and sit still where you are. 2. Notice the weight of the body, the breath, the sounds in the room. Then notice that something is aware of all of it. Spend the last minute simply on that awareness. 3. In the evening, write one line on what in you stayed the same while your mood changed during the day. 4. Repeat for one week, at the same hour.

A daughter sits by her mother's hospital bed at two in the morning. Her mother sleeps, one hand thin on the blanket. The daughter has been telling herself that the real conversations, and the quieter living, will come once all this is over. The verse speaks to that moment by naming the postponement. Yama says the knowing belongs to here, before the body falls apart, and not to some calmer season. So she puts the phone down, feels her feet on the floor and her breath going in and out, and asks who it is that sits here watching. She does not need an answer by morning. She only needs to have turned toward the question while she can. Ordinary experience confirms that what is put off for a quieter time rarely finds one. The verse teaches, as Yama's teaching, that a body is taken again by one who has not known. It does not take away her grief, it does not change her mother's illness, and it does not stand in for the doctors and nurses who are caring for her.
