Four Mirrors of the Self
Katha Upanishad 2.3.5
Meaning · English
In oneself it is seen as in a mirror. In the world of the fathers it is seen as in a dream. In the world of the gandharvas it is seen as on rippling water. In Brahma's world it is seen as light and shadow, side by side.
Yama is telling Nachiketas where the Self can be seen, and how well. Atman is the Self, the inner knower in each person. The Upanishad treats it as one with Brahman, the vast reality underneath everything. A loka is a world, a place of experience. Pitriloka is the world of the fathers, the ancestors. Gandharvas are celestial singers, and their world is another realm of enjoyment. Brahmaloka is the world of Brahma, the creator. Yama gives four comparisons. In oneself, the Self shows as a face shows in a mirror: plainly. Among the fathers it is like a dream, with no firm outline. Among the gandharvas it is like a reflection on moving water, broken and shifting. In Brahma's world it is like light and shade, clearly set apart but still two things. The reason is in the verse before. Yama has said that whoever fails to understand before the body falls takes a body again. So the verse ranks the places by clarity, and the human body comes first. Shankara reads the mirror as a quiet, cleaned mind, in which the Self shows without distortion. For him the other worlds hold the same Self, but seen through dimmer surfaces. Yama's point for Nachiketas is that the clearest seeing is available now.
Shake a jar of pond water and nothing in it can be seen. Set it on a shelf for an hour and the silt drops, and you can see straight through to the other side. The jar is the mind, and the settled water is the clarity in which the Self shows.
1. Tonight, sit for ten minutes before sleep with the phone in another room. 2. Watch what stirs: plans, replays of the day, small worries. Do not fix any of it. Just see it, the way you would watch silt in a jar. 3. When one thought passes, ask quietly, "Who is noticing this?" and stay with that question for a minute. 4. Tomorrow, notice whether your mind was any clearer when you woke.
A woman sits in a hospital corridor waiting for her father's scan result. She reads the same message on her phone four times and cannot say what it says. Her mind is churning, and everything she looks at seems to waver. The verse would change the moment in small steps. First she would see that the wavering is in the surface she is looking through, not in the world itself. Then she would put the phone down and let her breath slow. Then she would notice that something in her is watching the fear, and is not the fear. Yama's teaching is that this watcher is the Self, and that it shows most plainly when the mind is still, like a face in a mirror. Ordinary experience confirms the first part: a worried, tired mind misreads even a simple text message. The verse does not promise the scan will be good, or that the fear will leave. It does not replace the doctor's words, or her need for someone to sit beside her.
