Testing Possibilities Before Knowing

Where the truth of a matter is not yet known, conjecture that weighs which possibility the reasons fit, undertaken in order to know the truth: that is reasoning.
The question is what happens in the gap between not knowing and knowing. For the Nyaya, that gap is filled by tarka, reasoning by supposition. Vatsyayana lays out the steps. First a wish to know arises. Then the mind sets two opposed possibilities side by side: is it this way, or not? It then asks of each whether reasons fit it, and leans toward the one they fit. His example is the knower, the self. Did it come into being, or not? If it never began, it can reap the results of its own past actions, and both bondage and release make sense. If it began with this body, there is no earlier self to reap anything, and those ideas collapse. Reason fits the first, so tarka favours it. Vatsyayana stresses that tarka is not yet knowledge. It lends support but does not settle the matter. It prepares the ground, and a pramana, a reliable means of knowing such as perception or inference, then delivers the truth.
1. Today, pick one open question you face, such as why a plant is wilting or why a colleague went quiet. 2. Write down two opposed answers, one per line. 3. Under each, spend five minutes listing what would have to follow if it were true. 4. Mark which list fits what you already see. Call that answer 'likely', not 'settled'. 5. Then go and check it directly: look, ask, or measure before you act on it.
Tarka sits close to what logicians now call reasoning from hypotheses: suppose a claim, trace its consequences, and see whether they clash with what is known. Reductio arguments, counterfactual thinking and the scientist's habit of testing a hypothesis by its predictions all work this way. The American philosopher Peirce named a related step 'abduction', forming a hypothesis that would explain the facts, an idea later linked to inference to the best explanation. The Nyaya point that such reasoning supports but does not prove holds up well; modern philosophy of science agrees that a hypothesis fitting the facts can still be wrong, and Popper built his account of science on that gap. Cognitive science adds a caution: people tend to trace consequences only for the option they already favour. Vatsyayana's own example, whether the self had a beginning, remains a question of metaphysics that no experiment has settled.
