Debating to Win

Nyaya Sutras 1.2.2

Meaning · English

Debate to win has the features just described, and in it one's own case is made, and the other's attacked, also by quibbles, stock rejoinders and points that defeat an opponent.

The sutra before this one described honest discussion, which the Nyaya calls vada. This one asks what a debate looks like when the goal is to win. The Nyaya's answer is jalpa. It keeps every feature of honest discussion: real evidence and supporting reasoning, consistency with accepted doctrine, the five-step argument and two clear sides. But it adds three tools for making your case and attacking the other's. Chala is the quibble, which twists a word into a sense the speaker did not mean. Jati is the cheap rejoinder, which objects only because two things look alike or unlike. Nigrahasthana, a 'point of defeat', catches the opponent misstating something or failing to grasp it. Vatsyayana explains that none of these can prove anything on its own, because each is built only to block. So they serve real evidence as helpers. They guard your thesis by knocking down attacks on it. He quotes an image the Nyaya Sutras themselves use later: they work the way a thorny hedge guards a young sprout. When refuting, he allows that they can also work on their own. Read this way, jalpa is legitimate but subordinate to evidence.

1. Today, when someone takes your words in a sense you did not mean, say so calmly. Then restate your point in one plain sentence. 2. Before a disagreement at work or at home, write down the one piece of evidence your view rests on. Any clever move you make should only protect that point. It should never stand in for it. 3. Tonight, spend five minutes recalling a recent argument. Ask whether you objected only because two cases looked alike or unlike. If you did, find the actual reason, or drop the point.

Western philosophy drew the same line. Plato set dialectic, which aims at truth, against eristic, which aims at victory. Aristotle catalogued the tricks of the sophists, and Schopenhauer later listed stratagems for winning an argument while in the wrong. Modern logic still names the quibble as equivocation, and objecting from mere likeness resembles the faulty analogy. The Nyaya's defence of jalpa has a modern parallel too. Adversarial courtrooms assume that a hard-fought contest, held within rules, guards the truth. Cognitive science adds a complication. Research on motivated reasoning suggests that people argue more to defend their side than to discover the truth. Tactics used to win can also harden beliefs rather than test them. Whether the thorny hedge protects the sprout or chokes it remains an open question.
