Attack Without a Thesis
Nyaya Sutras 1.2.3
Meaning · English
That same contest of argument, when it lacks the establishing of any counter-position of one's own, is cavil.
The question behind the sutra: what do you call an argument where one side only attacks? Gautama has just described jalpa, debate fought to win, where tricks are allowed. Vitanda, often called cavil, is that same contest with one thing missing. That thing is sthapana, the establishing, of a pratipaksha, a counter-position. The caviller pokes holes and never says what he holds true. Vatsyayana explains it this way. A debate has two opposed claims about the same thing. The caviller defends neither. He moves forward only by knocking down the other person's claim. Someone might ask why the sutra does not simply say vitanda has no position at all. Vatsyayana answers that the caviller does have something like a side: his string of refutations. What he lacks is a thesis he commits to and then tries to prove. So the sutra's wording stands. For the Nyaya, then, pure attack is its own named form of contest. It can show a claim is weak, yet it puts nothing in that claim's place.
1. In your next disagreement today, before you criticise, say in one sentence what you think is true instead. 2. Spend ten minutes on one comment thread or opinion page. Sort each reply: does it only attack, or does it also propose something? 3. Tonight, pick one objection you raised today. Write down the positive claim it quietly assumes, and one reason you have for that claim. 4. If you find you have no claim, note it plainly. That objection worked the way vitanda does.
Modern logic sides with the caviller on one point. A single counterexample can sink a general claim, and the critic need not offer a better theory to land it. Karl Popper built a philosophy of science on the worth of refutation. The Pyrrhonian sceptics of Greece argued against every view while asserting none. So pure critique has a respected history in the West too. The Nyaya point is different and still sharp: a contest in which one side commits to no thesis cannot settle what is true, only what fails. Critical-thinking teaching today speaks of burden of proof and of the gap between tearing down and building up. Cognitive scientists studying reasoning in groups note that people are often better at spotting flaws in others' arguments than in their own. Pure attack exploits that. What stays open is whether such critique is a fair method or an evasion. The answer may depend on the goal: testing a claim, or finding what is true.
