Five Ways Reasons Fail

The wandering, the contradictory, the question-matching, the unproved and the mistimed: these are the reasons that only seem to be reasons.

In a Nyaya argument the hetu, the reason, carries all the weight. Smoke on the hill is the reason for saying there is fire. So the real question is how a reason can look sound and still fail. Nyaya calls such reasons hetvabhasa, 'what only looks like a reason', and this sutra names five. The wandering reason sometimes goes with the conclusion and sometimes does not, so it settles nothing. The contradictory reason works against the very position it is offered for. The question-matching reason leaves the matter as open as before, because the other side can point to something just as strong. The unproved reason needs proof as badly as the conclusion does. The mistimed reason is applied where it no longer holds. Readers differ on this last one: later Nyaya takes it as a reason already overturned by stronger evidence. The printed commentary gives only its opening word here. For the Nyaya, then, an argument stands or falls with its reason.

A counterfeit coin passes from hand to hand because it has the right weight, colour and stamp. A careful shopkeeper rings it on the counter and hears the dull note. A faulty reason is that coin. It has the outward shape of evidence and is spent as evidence, until someone tests what it is made of.

Several of the five sit close to faults that critical-thinking courses teach today. The unproved reason resembles begging the question, where a premise is as doubtful as the conclusion. The wandering reason is a reason open to counterexample. On the later reading, the mistimed reason is one already overturned, and this matches the idea of defeasible reasoning in modern epistemology: a good reason can still be defeated by stronger evidence. One difference matters. Modern logic separates validity, the form of an argument, from soundness, the truth of its premises. Nyaya treats both together, as faults in how a reason connects to the world. So Nyaya's list mixes what modern logic would call formal and material faults. Modern logic generally doubts that any list of fallacies can be complete, while Nyaya offers its five as a complete classification.
