Evidence That Fits Both Sides

Nyaya Sutras 1.2.5

Meaning · English

The straying reason is the inconclusive one: it does not stay with a single conclusion.

The question is simple. When does a reason, the hetu or mark you offer as evidence, fail to prove anything? For the Nyaya, one way is when it strays. Anaikantika means 'not of one end.' Savyabhicara means 'with straying.' A good reason stays on one side and points only toward the conclusion. A straying reason is found on both sides. Vatsyayana gives the example. Someone argues that sound is eternal because it cannot be touched. Check the cases. The Nyaya holds that the self cannot be touched and is eternal. So far it works. But a passing thought also cannot be touched, and it does not last. Touchable things split the same way: a pot is touchable and perishes, while an atom, for the Nyaya, is touchable and lasts forever. So being untouchable sits with both the lasting and the passing. Vatsyayana concludes that it connects to neither and is not a reason at all, only something that looks like one.

1. Today, when you notice yourself thinking 'X, because Y', stop for ten seconds and name Y. 2. Ask one question: where else is Y found? Find one case where Y is present and X is false. 3. If you find such a case, drop Y as proof for now and write down one better reason, or none. 4. Tonight, take one claim you read or heard today and test its reason the same way. Five minutes is enough.

This is the counterexample, the most basic tool of modern logic. A claim of the form 'whatever has Y has X' falls to a single case of Y without X. Statisticians make the same point another way. Evidence that is just as likely whether a claim is true or false should not move your belief at all. Cognitive science adds why the fault is common. People tend to collect the cases that agree with them and stop looking. That habit is confirmation bias. Vatsyayana's actual example now fails on its facts. Modern physics does not treat atoms as eternal. The logical shape still holds. One question remains open, the one Hume raised. Checking the cases you have seen cannot rule out a straying case you have not met yet.
