Undercutting Your Own Position

Nyaya Sutras 1.2.6

Meaning · English

When a reason is offered after a position has been accepted, and that reason contradicts the very position accepted, it is the contradictory reason.

What makes a reason worse than weak? Gautama names one kind of hetvabhasa, a 'reason that only looks like a reason': the viruddha, or contradictory reason. First you accept a siddhanta, a settled position you stand on. Then you give a hetu, a reason, for some conclusion. If that reason clashes with the position you already accepted, it is viruddha. For the Nyaya, such a reason does not merely fail to help. It knocks down its own foundation. Vatsyayana gives an example. Someone argues that a product drops out of manifest being because it is not eternal. The same person also holds that a product, once dropped out, still exists, because it is never destroyed. Vatsyayana explains that becoming manifest means coming into one's own being, and dropping out means losing it. Whatever goes on existing after losing its being is, in effect, eternal. So 'still exists' and 'has fallen away from being' cannot both be true of one thing. The reason undoes the ground it stands on.

1. Tonight, pick one opinion you argued for recently, at work, at home or online. Write it down in one sentence. 2. Under it, list the two or three reasons you gave. For each one, spend two minutes asking: if this reason is true, what else must I accept? 3. Set those answers beside the things you have already said you believe. Where one clashes with another, mark it. Before you use that argument again, decide which of the two you will keep.

Modern formal logic has a close match: an inconsistent set of premises. If your accepted beliefs and your offered reason together imply a contradiction, the argument cannot be sound. In classical logic, inconsistent premises even allow any conclusion at all to follow, so the fault is serious. Philosophers also discuss self-refuting claims, and internal critique, the method of beating a view on its own terms. The Nyaya idea fits this well. Cognitive psychology adds that people are better at spotting flaws in others' arguments than in their own, which is one reason a named checklist of faults is useful. Two questions stay open. Paraconsistent logics try to contain some contradictions without collapse. And a defender may say that two senses of 'exists' are in play, so whether a clash is real often depends on careful definitions.
