The Question-Reopening Reason

Nyaya Sutras 1.2.7

Meaning · English

When the very ground from which deliberation on a disputed question arises is put forward to settle that question, it is the reason that stays level with the question.

What makes a reason useless even when it sounds fine? Gautama names one failure: the prakaranasama, the reason 'level with the question'. A prakarana is an open question with two live sides, neither yet settled. If the thing that started you wondering is then offered as the answer, it cannot answer. Vatsyayana explains with a debate about sound. One side argues that sound is impermanent, because we notice nothing permanent about it. The other replies that sound is permanent, because we notice nothing impermanent about it. Both lean on the same blank: no feature decides it either way. That blank, he says, is exactly why the question exists. If either feature were seen, there would be nothing to debate. He also separates this from the straying reason, where a property shared by both sides breeds doubt. For the Nyaya, a reason that feeds both sides equally keeps the enquiry going. It cannot end it.

1. Today, pick one question you are still turning over, such as a purchase, a job choice or a news claim. Write one line giving the reason you lean the way you do. 2. Write the opposite conclusion underneath. Check whether your same reason could support it just as well. 3. If it could, cross it out. Spend ten minutes looking for one fact that would favour only one side. 4. In your next disagreement, ask yourself whether your point would work equally well for the other person before you make it.

Today's closest match is the idea of diagnostic evidence. In probability-based accounts of confirmation, a piece of evidence supports one hypothesis over another only if it is more expected under one than under the other. Evidence equally expected under both leaves the balance where it was, which is the Nyaya point in modern dress. Research on judgment also finds that people often cite non-diagnostic facts as if they decided a matter, especially facts that fit what they already believe. The example also touches the argument from ignorance, reasoning from 'nothing shows X' to 'not X'. Modern epistemology adds a caveat. Absence of a feature can count as evidence when you would expect to see the feature if it were there. Probability-based accounts tell those cases apart from the symmetrical blank Vatsyayana describes by asking whether the absence is more expected under one side than the other; applying that test in real cases is often the hard part.
