Proof Still Needing Proof

Nyaya Sutras 1.2.8

Meaning · English

A reason no different from what is to be proved, because it too still has to be proved, is called 'on a par with the thesis'.

What goes wrong when the evidence you offer is as shaky as your conclusion? For the Nyaya, a reason (hetu, the ground given for a claim) must already be settled, or it cannot carry any weight. The sutra names a reason that fails this test. It is no different from the sadhya, the thing to be proved, because it still needs proving itself. Such a reason is called sadhyasama, 'on a par with the thesis'. Vatsyayana gives an example. Someone argues that a shadow is a substance because it moves. But does a shadow move? Vatsyayana explains that it may not. As a body travels, it blocks one patch of light after another, and what we see is an unbroken run of places where light is missing. Blocking just means stopping light from arriving. So 'it moves' needs an argument of its own. Until it gets one, the proof rests on nothing firmer than the claim it was meant to support.

1. Today, take one opinion piece or online argument and spend five minutes writing its conclusion and its main 'because' on a slip of paper. 2. Ask of that 'because': would someone who doubts the conclusion already accept it? If not, mark it. 3. In your next disagreement, pause before giving your reason and check silently whether it is settled or only your conclusion in other words. 4. Take one marked reason and spend ten minutes looking for what would actually support it.

Western logic's closest counterpart is begging the question, or petitio principii, a name going back to Aristotle's discussion of debate. Sadhyasama is wider, though: it covers any reason still needing proof, not only one that assumes the conclusion. Modern informal logic adds a useful point: such an argument can be formally valid and still fail, because a premise the doubter rejects persuades no one. The fault lies in the exchange between people, not in the argument's form. That fits the Nyaya setting of debate well. The shadow example also holds up. Physics treats a shadow as a region where light is blocked, not as a thing, and a shadow's edge can sweep across a distant surface faster than light because nothing travels along it. What stays open is where reasons must finally rest. If every premise needs support, the chain never ends, a puzzle sceptics have pressed since antiquity. Psychology adds that our own premises tend to feel obvious to us.
