A reason put forward after its time has lapsed is the mistimed reason.
The question is how a reason that seems to fit can still fail. Gautama names one kind of hetvabhasa, a 'reason-semblance' that looks like evidence but is not. This one is kalatita, 'past its time.' Part of what it relies on depends on a timing that does not hold. Vatsyayana explains with an argument a debater might offer. Sound is permanent, it says, because a contact reveals it. A lamp meeting a pot in the dark reveals the pot's colour, which was there before and stays after. In the same way, it goes, sound is always there, and a stick on a drum or an axe on wood only reveals it. Vatsyayana checks the timing. Colour is seen only while the lamp is present. Yet a person far away hears the axe after it has left the wood. The hearing outlasts the contact, so the contact cannot be what reveals the sound, since an effect does not occur without its cause. The likeness to the example breaks, and the reason proves nothing.
1. Today, when you explain why something happened, ask one timing question: does the effect appear only while your supposed cause is present, or does it outlast it? 2. Pick one comparison you use in a disagreement ("it's just like..."). For two minutes, write down one way the two cases differ in timing. 3. Next time you see hammering or a ball being kicked at a distance, notice whether the sound reaches you after the blow. Ask what that delay tells you about cause and effect.
For the Nyaya, this fallacy tests a comparison against timing, and that test holds up well today. Hume treated contiguity and succession in time as central to how we judge causes. Modern critical thinking calls an argument whose example differs from the case in a relevant way a false analogy. Physics agrees with Vatsyayana's conclusion but not with every step. Sound is not a permanent presence waiting to be revealed. It is a vibration that an impact produces. But physics explains the late hearing differently. The sound takes time to travel through the air, so a delayed effect does not show that the contact was not its cause. Effects that arrive after their causes have ended remain a live question in the philosophy of causation.
