Quibbling is blocking what someone has said by proposing another meaning their words could bear. It is of three kinds: quibbling on a word, quibbling on a generalization, and quibbling on a figure of speech.
What counts as an illegitimate move in argument? The Nyaya names one: chala, quibbling. Someone says something. Instead of answering what they meant, you attach a different meaning their words can also carry, and attack that. Their statement is blocked, but their point is never touched. The sutra sorts this into three kinds. A word-quibble uses a word with two senses and picks the one the speaker did not mean. A generalization-quibble reads a possible claim as if it followed from a class that is too wide, and so pins an impossible meaning on it: told 'this brahmin is learned', it answers, 'then uninitiated brahmin boys would be learned too.' A figurative quibble takes a figure of speech literally, answering 'the kettle is boiling' with 'kettles do not boil, water does.' Vatsyayana notes that quibbling cannot be illustrated from the general definition; examples come only with its division into kinds. For the Nyaya, the test follows: if a reply collapses once the speaker's intended sense is restored, it was a quibble, not a refutation.
1. The next time you disagree with someone today, in person or in a message thread, first restate their point in one sentence and ask whether that is what they mean. 2. Tonight, reread one reply you wrote this week. Check whether you answered the sense they intended, or a second meaning their words happened to allow. 3. When someone uses a figure of speech such as 'everyone knows' or 'the office decided', answer the plain point behind it, not the literal wording.
Informal logic today knows this territory well. The fallacy of equivocation trades on a word's two senses. The straw man attacks a version of a claim the speaker did not hold. Philosophers such as Quine and Davidson argued for a principle of charity: read others in the way that makes the best sense of what they say. Grice's work in philosophy of language separates what a sentence literally says from what a speaker means by it, which is the same gap a quibbler exploits. Cognitive linguistics shows that figurative speech is pervasive in ordinary talk, so reading it literally usually misses what was meant. One question remains open. Some ambiguity is real, and asking for clarification is fair. Where clarifying ends and quibbling begins still depends on judgement about what the speaker intended.
